## Identification Field identification of zvyagintsevite is impossible due to its microscopic size and resemblance to other sulfides and native metals. Definitive identification requires advanced laboratory methods, such as chemical composition analysis (EDS/WDS) using an electron microprobe and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other platinum group minerals, such as native platinum, native palladium, atokite (Pd₃Sn), or rustenburgite (Pt₃Sn). Differentiation relies solely on precise chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Zvyagintsevite crystallizes in the isometric system. It most commonly forms irregular, anhedral (lacking well-formed faces) grains and flakes. Poorly developed, cubic crystal forms are rarely observed.
Geological environment
## Genesis Zvyagintsevite is a mineral of magmatic origin. It forms in ultramafic igneous rocks, such as dunites and pyroxenites, often within copper-nickel sulfide deposits. It crystallizes during the late stages of magma rich in platinum group elements. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other platinum group minerals, such as rustenburgite, atokite, native platinum, as well as with copper, nickel, and iron sulfides, e.g., chalcopyrite, pentlandite, cubanite, and magnetite. ## Localities The most important localities worldwide, from which well-studied specimens originate, include: - Talnakh and Oktyabrskoye deposits in the Norilsk region, Siberia (Russia) - type locality. - Bushveld Complex in the Republic of South Africa. - Sudbury deposit in Ontario (Canada). - Stillwater Complex in Montana (USA).

## Quality Criteria The quality of a zvyagintsevite specimen is primarily assessed based on the size and degree of development of the grains, although these rarely exceed a millimeter. The most valued specimens are those in which zvyagintsevite grains are clearly visible against the host rock and well-separated from other minerals. A rich association with other rare platinum group minerals also increases the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities The most classic and prized specimens, though still microscopic, come from the copper-nickel deposits in the Norilsk region of Siberia, Russia.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Zvyagintsevite specimens, due to their microscopic size and occurrence within the host rock, typically do not require cleaning. If necessary, compressed air can be used to remove dust. Contact with water and chemical agents should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids and other aggressive chemicals that may react with metals. The mineral is stable, but it should be protected from mechanical damage and scratching. ## Storage Specimens are best stored in specialized "micromount" boxes, which protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Due to its metallic nature, it is not sensitive to light, but extreme temperatures should be avoided.
