Diagnostic features
## Identification Zincostrunzite is identified by its characteristic occurrence as small, acicular or hair-like crystals forming radial or felted aggregates. Its light yellow color and co-occurrence with other secondary phosphate minerals in oxidation zones of deposits are also key. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals This mineral can be confused with other minerals from the strunzite group, such as strunzite (ferrous) or ferristrunzite (ferric), which have a similar appearance. Differentiation requires precise chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). Other secondary phosphates, such as cacoxenite or laueite, may also have a similar appearance, but zincostrunzite is distinguished by its specific, light yellow hue and aggregate form. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are strongly elongated, acicular or hair-like. They usually form radial aggregates resembling spheres or hemispheres, as well as tangled, felted or woolly aggregates and crusts.
Geological environment
## Genesis Zincostrunzite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation (weathering) zones of ore deposits, especially those containing zinc minerals (sphalerite) and iron, in the presence of phosphorus derived from the decomposition of primary phosphates (e.g., apatite) or organic matter. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with other secondary phosphate minerals such as strunzite, laueite, rockbridgeite, strengite, beraunite, as well as goethite and quartz. ## Localities The most important and well-documented localities for zincostrunzite worldwide are the St. Christoph mine in the Freiberg area of Saxony (Germany), where it was discovered. It is also known from the Silver Coin mine in Valmy County, Nevada (USA).

## Quality Criteria The most valuable zincostrunzite specimens are characterized by an intense, light yellow color and well-formed, radial aggregates of acicular crystals, forming aesthetic "hedgehog-like" or "ball-like" structures on a contrasting rock matrix. The absence of damage to the delicate crystals and the abundance of aggregates on the specimen's surface are important.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Specimens should only be cleaned with compressed air to remove dust. Due to the extreme delicacy of the crystals, contact with water, brushes, or ultrasonics is highly inadvisable and will lead to the destruction of the specimen. ## What to Avoid Avoid all contact with water and chemicals. The crystals are very brittle and fragile, so the specimen should be protected from shocks, impacts, and vibrations. It should also not be exposed to high temperatures. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, padded collector's boxes to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Display should be in stable conditions, away from sources of vibration.
