Zincochromite is a very rare mineral from the spinel group, an oxide of zinc and chromium, occurring as microscopic, black grains.

## Characteristics Zincochromite is a rare member of the spinel group, with the chemical formula ZnCr₂O₄. It most commonly occurs as very small, sharp, octahedral crystals or as irregular grains intergrown with other minerals. Its size rarely exceeds fractions of a millimeter, making it a mineral primarily for collectors specializing in microminerals. It is opaque, black, rarely dark brown, with a submetallic luster. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of zincochromite is approximately 5.5, which is typical for minerals of the spinel group. It is a brittle mineral, with a density of about 5.34 g/cm³, which is a relatively high value. It does not exhibit cleavage, and its fracture is conchoidal. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is uniformly black or very dark brown. No color varieties or trade names are known. Its appearance is very similar to the much more common chromite. ## History and Name The name zincochromite, given in 1942, directly refers to its chemical composition – the content of zinc (Latin: *zincum*) and chromium (Greek: *chrōma* - color). The mineral was first described by V. A. Zimin based on specimens found in the Nizhny Tagil massif in the Urals, Russia, which is its type locality. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence only as microscopic grains, zincochromite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of scientific and collector interest.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of zincochromite is impossible without advanced analytical techniques. Its black color, submetallic luster, octahedral crystal form, and high density are characteristic features of many spinels. Definitive identification requires chemical analysis, e.g., using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS), to confirm the dominance of zinc and chromium. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Zincochromite is visually indistinguishable from the much more common chromite (FeCr₂O₄), as well as from magnetite (Fe₃O₄) and hercynite (FeAl₂O₄). All these minerals are black, opaque, crystallize in the isometric system, and have similar hardness. Distinguishing them "by hand" or under a microscope without compositional analysis is impossible. ## Crystal Forms Zincochromite forms well-developed, sharp octahedral crystals, typical of spinels. It also occurs as irregular, anhedral grains within the rock mass.

Geological environment

## Genesis Zincochromite is an accessory mineral formed under specific geological conditions. It forms in metamorphosed, chromium- and zinc-rich sulfide deposits (e.g., Outokumpu in Finland). It also occurs in altered ultramafic rocks, kimberlites, and as a heavy mineral in alluvial concentrates (river sediments) formed from the weathering of such rocks. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with other chromium and zinc minerals. Typical associated minerals include chromite, eskolaite, uvarovite, kämmererite (a variety of clinochlore), as well as zincian staurolite, tremolite, calcite, and quartz. ## Localities The most important localities from which the best-studied specimens originate are the Nizhny Tagil massif in the Urals (Russia), the Outokumpu complex in Finland, and the Dabie massif in China. It is also found in kimberlites in South Africa and Yakutia. All these localities provide only microscopic specimens.

## Quality Criteria For a micromineral like zincochromite, collector value is defined not by size, but by the quality of the microscopic crystals. Specimens with sharp, fully developed, undamaged octahedra, clearly set on a contrasting matrix, are most highly prized. The richness of the specimen (number of crystals on the matrix) and association with other rare minerals, such as eskolaite or uvarovite, significantly increase its attractiveness. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the Finnish Outokumpu deposit are considered classic and most sought after by collectors, known for their sharp crystals and interesting associations. Material from the type locality in the Urals primarily has historical and reference value.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Zincochromite specimens are almost exclusively microminerals, which rarely require cleaning. If necessary, dust can be removed with compressed air (from a safe distance) or a soft-bristled brush. Ultrasonic cleaners and vigorous scrubbing, which could damage or detach tiny crystals from the matrix, should be avoided. ## What to Avoid As an oxide, zincochromite is relatively chemically stable. However, contact with strong acids should be avoided. It is resistant to light and normal temperature changes. ## Storage The best way to store it is in a specialized "micromount" box, which protects delicate crystals from dust, shocks, and mechanical damage. A label with the exact locality is crucial for the specimen's value.
