Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of zhenruite is impossible without advanced analytical techniques. Preliminary identification in a collection is based on label analysis and comparison with the appearance of specimens from the type locality. Characteristic features include microscopic, white, platy crystals forming fan-like aggregates on the host rock. Final confirmation requires chemical (EDS) and structural (XRD) analysis. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Due to its appearance and chemical composition, zhenruite can be confused with other secondary molybdenum minerals, such as molybdite (MoO₃) or shenite (Mo₂O₅(OH)₂). Molybdite has a similar composition but a different crystal structure and usually forms yellowish or greenish coatings. Shenite is also a hydrated molybdenum oxide but crystallizes in a different system. Distinguishing these minerals requires specialized laboratory tests. ## Crystal Forms Zhenruite forms elongated, platy or acicular crystals, flattened parallel to {010}. These crystals often combine into fan-like, rosette-like, or radial aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Zhenruite is a secondary mineral that forms in the oxidation (weathering) zone of metal ore deposits. It results from the oxidation of primary molybdenum sulfides, such as molybdenite (MoS₂), under low temperature and pressure conditions, in the presence of water. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other secondary minerals of the oxidation zone. At the type locality, it was found in association with quartz, calcite, hemimorphite, hydrocerussite, anglesite, and the newly described shenite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of zhenruite in the world is its type locality – the Bama Pb-Zn deposit, located in Bama Yao Autonomous County, Hechi Prefecture, Guangxi Autonomous Region in southern China.

## Quality Criteria As a "micromount" mineral, the collectible value of zhenruite depends on the richness and aesthetics of the crystal aggregates. Most prized are specimens with well-formed, abundant clusters of white, platy crystals, forming visually attractive fans or rosettes. Contrast with darker host rock and the presence of associated minerals are also important. ## Popular Localities The only source of collectible specimens is the type locality in Bama, China. Specimens from this location are considered reference for the species.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Zhenruite specimens are extremely delicate and susceptible to mechanical damage. Cleaning is not recommended. Any attempts to remove dust should be limited to very careful use of a soft brush or a photographic air blower, without touching the fragile crystals. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water, chemicals, ultrasound, and sudden temperature changes. The crystals are very brittle, so avoid any vibrations, shocks, and touching. ## Storage Specimens should be stored exclusively in specialized, sealed "micromount" boxes that protect against dust and mechanical damage. Store in stable conditions, away from sources of moisture and direct sunlight.
