Zangboite

Zangboite is an extremely rare mineral from the silicate group, a natural alloy of titanium, iron, and silicon, discovered in rocks from Tibet.

## Characteristics Zangboite is an opaque mineral with a metallic luster. It occurs as very fine, irregular grains, usually not exceeding 10-60 micrometers in size. Its grains are most often intergrown with other minerals, mainly osbornite and coesite. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, visual features visible to the naked eye are not observable. ## Physical Properties Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic grain sizes, most of zangboite's physical properties have not been fully investigated. Hardness and density have not been precisely measured, only theoretically calculated. The mineral exhibits a strong, metallic luster. ## Colors and Varieties Observed in reflected light, it has a grayish-white color with a slight yellowish tint. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from the Yarlung Zangbo River, near which it was discovered in the Luobusha massif in Tibet. It was officially approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2007 (IMA2007-048). It was described by a team of scientists: F. Fang, S. Bai, Q. Li, Z. Xiong, H. Yang, and P. G. Spry.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of zangboite is possible only with advanced laboratory techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with chemical composition analysis (EDS/WDS). In reflected light under a polarizing microscope, it exhibits weak anisotropy. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Due to its unique chemical composition (TiFeSi₂) and occurrence, it is difficult to confuse with other minerals after chemical analysis. Visually, without specialized equipment, it is impossible to distinguish from other fine, metallic inclusions. ## Crystal Forms Zangboite forms only anhedral (irregular), very fine grains, typically ranging from 10 to 60 µm.

Geological environment

## Genesis Zangboite forms under specific conditions found in ultramafic rocks (peridotites) in subduction zones. Its formation is associated with reducing processes in the deep parts of the Earth's mantle. It occurs in podiform chromitites. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with diamond, moissanite, osbornite, coesite, chromite, forsterite, enstatite, and various iron-silicon alloys (e.g., suessite, xifengite) and titanium-silicon alloys. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of zangboite in the world is the Luobusha ophiolite in Tibet (China). This is its type locality.

For collectors

## Quality Criteria Zangboite does not occur in macroscopic specimens and is not traded on the collector's market. Its value is purely scientific. The only form in which it can be possessed are fragments of host rock (chromitite) with analytically confirmed microscopic grains, available almost exclusively in research institutions.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its microscopic size and occurrence as inclusions in other minerals, individual zangboite grains are not subject to cleaning. Host rock specimens should be cleaned mechanically with a very delicate brush, avoiding contact with water and chemicals. ## What to Avoid Avoid all chemical agents, acids, and ultrasonic cleaners, which could damage both the mineral itself and the surrounding rock matrix. ## Storage Specimens containing zangboite should be stored under stable conditions, in a dry environment, away from dust. It is best to keep them in specialized display boxes that protect against mechanical damage.
