Diagnostic features
## Identification Yofortierite can be identified by its characteristic fibrous form, the flexibility of individual fibers, and its pink or purple color. Silky luster and occurrence in felt-like or radial aggregates are also key features. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other fibrous minerals such as palygorskite, sepiolite, or some asbestiform minerals. However, yofortierite is distinguished by its characteristic pinkish-purple color associated with the presence of manganese, which is usually absent in similar minerals. Unlike chrysotile, its fibers are more brittle. ## Crystal Forms It forms elongated, lath-like crystals up to 1 cm long, which aggregate into radial, fibrous, asbestiform, or felt-like masses. The crystals are too small to be observed with the naked eye.
Geological environment
## Genesis Yofortierite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the late stages of crystallization in complex, alkaline intrusive igneous rocks, such as nepheline syenites. It crystallizes in rock cavities and fissures, often in association with other rare minerals. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with many other minerals typical of nepheline syenite environments. At the type locality (Mont Saint-Hilaire), it was found in association with analcime, natrolite, aegirine, microcline, rhodochrosite, serpentine, and stephanite. In other localities, it is accompanied by eudialyte, lorenzenite, and vinogradovite, among others. ## Localities The most important and well-known locality, providing the best specimens, is the Mont Saint-Hilaire igneous complex in Quebec, Canada. Other confirmed localities include the Kola Peninsula in Russia (Khibiny and Lovozero massifs) and the Ilimaussaq complex in Greenland. These are the only places in the world where this mineral has been found.

## Quality Criteria The most prized yofortierite specimens are characterized by an intense, evenly distributed pink or purple color. The form of the aggregates is also important – well-formed, radial "suns" or dense, felt-like mats are sought after. The specimen should be as undamaged as possible, with well-preserved delicate fibers. The size of the specimen and the richness of the aggregates also significantly increase its value. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the type locality – Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada – are by far the most desired by collectors. They are characterized by the best development and most intense color. Specimens from the Kola Peninsula are also valued but often have a slightly different hue and form.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Yofortierite specimens are very delicate and fragile. They should only be cleaned with compressed air to remove dust. Any contact with water or other liquids is inadvisable, as it can damage the fibrous aggregates. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water and chemicals. The mineral is soft and susceptible to mechanical damage, so touching, abrasion, and vibrations should be avoided. It should not be heated or exposed to prolonged sunlight. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, padded collector boxes to protect them from dust, light, and physical damage. Due to its fragility, it is not suitable for display in open showcases.
