Xuwenyuanite is a rare silver and iron sulfide-telluride, forming small, metallic grains in hydrothermal quartz veins.

## Characteristics Xuwenyuanite is a very rare mineral from the sulfide and telluride group. It occurs as anhedral (not exhibiting its own crystal faces) grains, not exceeding 200 micrometers in size. It is most often observed as inclusions within galena or in its close vicinity. Its grains are opaque and have a metallic luster. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a black streak and metallic luster. It is brittle, and its Mohs hardness is 3. In reflected light, its color is gray with a slight yellowish tint. It does not exhibit internal reflections or pleochroism. ## History and Name Xuwenyuanite was officially recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2023 under number IMA2023-012. The name honors Xu Wenyuan (born 1966), a Chinese mineral collector who provided the material for research. The mineral was discovered in samples originating from the Gualam gold and silver deposit in Hebei Province, China.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of xuwenyuanite is only possible using advanced laboratory methods, such as chemical composition analysis (EDS) with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Visual identification is impossible. In reflected light under a polarizing microscope, it is gray with a yellowish tint and does not exhibit anisotropy. ## Differentiation from similar minerals It is distinguished from other opaque sulfides and tellurides occurring in the same environment (e.g., galena, argentite, hessite) by its unique chemical composition, combining silver, iron, tellurium, and sulfur. Galena has perfect cleavage, which xuwenyuanite lacks. Other silver tellurides have different elemental proportions. ## Crystal forms This mineral has so far only been observed in the form of anhedral, irregular grains, usually ranging from 20 to 200 micrometers in size. No well-formed crystals have been observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Xuwenyuanite forms under hydrothermal conditions, in quartz veins rich in precious metals (gold, silver). Its presence is associated with crystallization from solutions containing silver, iron, tellurium, and sulfur in the final stages of mineral vein formation. ## Mineral associations This mineral occurs in close association with galena (often as inclusions), sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, argentite, native gold, hessite (Ag₂Te), and quartz. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence (type locality) is the Gualam Au-Ag deposit, Chongli County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, China.

## Quality criteria As a microscopic mineral, xuwenyuanite is not evaluated based on typical aesthetic criteria such as color or form. Its collector's value is purely scientific and depends on the certainty of identification and the richness of the mineral association on the host specimen. The most valuable samples are those where xuwenyuanite grains are relatively "large" (above 100 micrometers) and well-documented analytically. ## Popular localities The only source of specimens is the type locality – the Gualam deposit in China. Any specimen from this location with confirmed presence of xuwenyuanite is extremely valuable for specialized collectors of rare and systematic minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the extreme rarity and small size of its grains, specimens containing xuwenyuanite (typically as inclusions in other minerals) should not be cleaned mechanically or chemically. Any intervention risks damaging or losing the microscopic grains. If it is necessary to remove dust from the host specimen, a gentle stream of compressed air should be used. ## What to avoid Contact with any chemicals, acids, and cleaning agents should be avoided. As a sulfide and telluride, the mineral is susceptible to oxidation and chemical reactions. It should be protected from moisture and sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Specimens containing xuwenyuanite should be stored under stable conditions, preferably in closed, padded "micromount" boxes, to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. Identification of the mineral requires specialized equipment, so preserving the original label with the exact location of the grain on the specimen is crucial.
