Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of xingzhongite is possible only through advanced laboratory techniques, such as reflected light ore microscopy and chemical analysis using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS). Its characteristic feature is its chemical composition – the co-occurrence of lead and iridium in a sulfide. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other small, metallic sulfides or platinum-group minerals occurring in ultramafic rocks. Differentiation from similar minerals of the linnaeite group, such as cuprorhodsite or malanite, requires precise chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Xingzhongite forms exclusively anhedral (lacking crystal faces), rounded or irregular grains and aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Xingzhongite forms as a result of magmatic processes in ultramafic rocks, rich in chromium and platinum-group metals. It is an accessory mineral in chromitite deposits, which are part of ophiolite complexes. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with chromite (as the main rock-forming mineral), as well as with other rare platinum-group minerals, such as irarsite, osarsite, laurite, iridium, osmiridium, and also with nickel and copper sulfides. ## Localities Beyond the type locality in Tibet (China), its occurrence has been confirmed in the Polar Urals ophiolite complex in Russia and in chromite deposits in the Lezha region in Albania.

## Quality Criteria Xingzhongite does not form macroscopic specimens and is not traded on the collector's market in the traditional sense. Its value is purely scientific. For research institutions and museums, the most valuable are rock samples (polished sections) with analytically confirmed presence of this mineral, originating from a well-documented locality.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to the extremely small size of the grains and its occurrence exclusively as inclusions in other minerals, xingzhongite specimens are not subject to cleaning in the traditional sense. Any attempts at mechanical or chemical intervention would destroy the specimen. ## What to Avoid Avoid all chemicals, ultrasonics, and rapid temperature changes that could damage the surrounding rock matrix. ## Storage Specimens containing xingzhongite should be stored in stable conditions, in specialized "micromount" boxes, protecting them from dust and mechanical damage. They do not require special protection from light or humidity.
