Wycheproofite is a rare phosphate mineral that forms colorless to white, bladed crystals with a pearly luster.

## Characteristics Wycheproofite is a hydrated sodium, aluminum, and zirconium phosphate. It occurs as very small, bladed or platy crystals, usually not exceeding 1 mm in length. The crystals are colorless to white and often form radial aggregates or small clusters on the surface of other minerals. Due to their small size, visual features are difficult to observe without magnification. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness of approximately 4 on the Mohs scale. It has a pearly luster on cleavage surfaces and a vitreous luster on other faces. It is transparent to translucent. The calculated density is 3.01 g/cm³. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery locality – a granite quarry near the town of Wycheproof in Victoria, Australia. It was described and approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1993. The discovery was made by Australian mineralogists Dermot A. Henry and William D. Birch.

Geological environment

## Genesis Wycheproofite forms as a secondary mineral in miarolitic cavities (vugs) within granites. It crystallizes in the late stage of hydrothermal processes, resulting from the alteration of primary minerals containing zirconium (like zircon) and phosphorus (like apatite). ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with minerals such as quartz, albite, muscovite, fluorite, zircon, eosphorite, strengite, rockbridgeite, and wardite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of this mineral worldwide is its type locality: the Lake Boga granite quarry near Wycheproof, Victoria, Australia.
