Diagnostic features
## Identification The key diagnostic features of wulffite are its intensely azure-blue color, tabular crystal habit, and specific fumarolic environment of occurrence. It exhibits strong pleochroism (from dark blue to almost colorless or light blue). It is non-radioactive and does not exhibit fluorescence. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Wulffite can be confused with other blue secondary sulfate minerals, such as chalcanthite or linarite. However, it is distinguished by its crystal habit (thin tablets), specific mineral association (e.g., with lammerite, tenorite), and occurrence limited to volcanic exhalations. ## Crystal Forms Wulffite forms very thin, tabular crystals with a hexagonal or octagonal outline. It occurs as single, scattered crystals or small, loose clusters and aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Wulffite is a mineral of volcanic origin, formed by sublimation from volcanic gases (exhalations) in a fumarolic environment. It crystallizes at high temperatures (above 600°C) under oxidizing conditions, depositing on the surface of lava or volcanic ash. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other sulfates and copper oxides formed under similar conditions. Typical associated minerals include tenorite, hematite, lammerite, chalcanthite, langbeinite, johillerite, arcanite, and other rare sulfates from the wulffite group. ## Localities The only confirmed and typical locality for wulffite in the world is the Arsenatnaya and Yadovitaya fumaroles on the second cinder cone of the northern breach of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (1975–1976) at Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka, Russia.

## Quality Criteria The most highly prized wulffite specimens are those with well-formed, sharp crystals of an intense, azure-blue color. Crystal size is important – the larger, the more valuable. The attractiveness is also enhanced by a contrasting, light matrix on which the crystals are embedded, and the presence of rare associated minerals. ## Popular Localities All wulffite specimens available on the collector's market come from a single location in the world – the Tolbachik volcanic complex in Kamchatka, Russia. This is the type locality and the only one from which this mineral is obtained.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Wulffite specimens should be cleaned with the utmost care, using only compressed air to remove dust. Due to its potential solubility in water, all contact with liquids, including water, even distilled, should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Contact with water and other chemicals that could dissolve or damage the delicate crystals must be strictly avoided. The mineral is brittle, so it should be protected from impacts and vibrations. It should also not be heated or exposed to sudden temperature changes. ## Storage It is recommended to store wulffite specimens in closed, stable containers (such as "membrane boxes" or boxes with soft lining) to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. Store in a dry place at a constant temperature.
