Diagnostic features
## Identification Key diagnostic features of wooldridgeite are its characteristic cornflower-blue color, bladed crystal habit forming radial aggregates, and low hardness. Its paragenesis – occurrence with other secondary copper minerals in oxidation zones – is also an important indicator. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Wooldridgeite is sometimes confused with other blue secondary minerals. It differs from **linarite** by its lighter shade of blue and crystal habit (linarite forms thicker, tabular crystals). **Azurite** usually has a darker, azure color and reacts with hydrochloric acid, effervescing. **Chalcanthite** is water-soluble, which is not observed in wooldridgeite. Final distinction often requires chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are thin, tabular or bladed, elongated along one of the crystallographic axes. They most often occur as radial or fan-shaped aggregates and rosettes, growing on the host rock.
Geological environment
## Genesis Wooldridgeite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation zone of copper deposits. It forms under desert or semi-desert conditions, often as a product of post-mining processes, crystallizing on the walls of old mine workings as a result of the interaction of phosphorus-rich waters with copper minerals. ## Mineral Associations At the type locality (Silver Coin mine), wooldridgeite coexists with minerals such as native silver, chlorargyrite, and other rare phosphates and sulfates. ## Localities The only confirmed and most important occurrence of this mineral worldwide is the Silver Coin mine, Iron Point district, Humboldt County, Nevada, USA. This is its type locality, from which virtually all known specimens originate.

## Quality Criteria The most highly prized wooldridgeite specimens are those with sharply terminated, well-formed crystals of an intensely saturated, cornflower-blue color. Composition is also important – attractive, radial aggregates on a contrasting rock matrix are more desirable. Due to the nature of a micromineral, the size of individual crystals is rarely the main criterion; rather, the richness and aesthetics of the entire aggregate are valued. ## Popular Localities All collector specimens come from a single location in the world – the Silver Coin mine in Nevada, USA. This locality is the source of the best and only specimens of this mineral available on the market.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Wooldridgeite specimens are very delicate and require careful handling. For dust removal, it is best to use compressed air or a very soft brush (e.g., squirrel hair). Avoid washing with water, and if absolutely necessary, use only distilled water very sparingly and dry the specimen immediately. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to high temperatures, which can lead to dehydration and destruction. It should be protected from all chemicals, especially acids, which can easily dissolve it. As a soft mineral, it is susceptible to scratching. It should not be cleaned in ultrasonic cleaners. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in stable conditions, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and sudden changes in humidity. The safest form of display and storage is in sealed "micromount" boxes, which protect delicate crystals from mechanical damage and dust.
