Witzkeite is a newly discovered, very rare mineral from the nitrate and sulfate group, found as tiny, colorless crystals in a Chilean mine.

## Characteristics Witzkeite is a very rare, recently described mineral from the nitrate and sulfate class. It occurs as very small, tabular or bladed crystals, usually not exceeding 0.4 mm in length. The crystals are colorless and transparent, with a vitreous luster. Due to its extreme rarity and small crystal size, it is a mineral of purely scientific and collectible interest. ## Physical Properties The mineral is characterized by a hardness of approximately 2.5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft. It is brittle and has perfect cleavage in one direction. Its density, calculated based on the chemical formula and unit cell parameters, is 2.61 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties The mineral is colorless. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of Thomas Witzke (born 1963), a German mineralogist and crystallographer, for his contributions to mineralogy, including the discovery of several new minerals. Witzkeite was approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2022 (IMA number 2022-091). It was described by Anthony R. Kampf and his team in 2023. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, witzkeite has no practical applications. It serves solely as an object of scientific research and is a valuable acquisition for specialized systematic collections.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Amateur identification of witzkeite is practically impossible due to its microscopic size and occurrence in only one location worldwide. Identification requires advanced analytical techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy, which allow it to be distinguished from co-occurring sulfates and nitrates. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It co-occurs with other colorless, water-soluble minerals such as nitratine, darapskite, and humberstonite. Distinguishing it from these is only possible using specialized laboratory methods. Visually, it is indistinguishable from many similar secondary minerals. ## Crystal Forms It forms very small, thin, tabular crystals with a bladed habit, elongated in one direction. These crystals occur as single individuals or small, loose aggregates on the surface of the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Witzkeite forms as a secondary mineral in extremely arid (desert) climatic conditions. It crystallizes as a result of the evaporation of solutions rich in sodium, potassium, calcium, sulfates, and nitrates. Its genesis is associated with rock weathering processes in a desert environment. ## Mineral Associations At the type locality (Pampa del Pique mine), it co-occurs with nitratine, darapskite, and humberstonite. ## Localities The only known occurrence of witzkeite in the world is the Pampa del Pique mine in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile. This is its type locality.

## Quality Criteria As a micromineral of primarily scientific importance, the value of a specimen is determined primarily by the certainty of its identification. The most valuable samples are those with the largest number of well-formed, though still microscopic, crystals, clearly visible against the host rock. Any specimen with confirmed analysis is extremely valuable. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the Pampa del Pique mine in Chile. Material from this locality is extremely difficult to obtain.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Witzkeite specimens, due to their fragility, small size, and water solubility, should not be wet cleaned. If necessary, dust can be removed very carefully with a soft brush or a stream of compressed air from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid Contact with water and other liquids that can dissolve the mineral must be strictly avoided. It should be protected from moisture, high temperatures, and all chemicals. Due to its low hardness, it is very susceptible to mechanical damage. ## Storage It is recommended to store witzkeite specimens in tightly sealed, dry containers (so-called "perky boxes") away from sources of moisture and sudden temperature changes. It is best to keep it in stable room conditions, protected from direct sunlight.
