Diagnostic features
## Identification The most important diagnostic features of windhoekite are its unique form – aggregates of thin, golden fibers with a silky luster. Very low hardness (approx. 2 on the Mohs scale) and occurrence in a specific geological environment (cavities in phonolite) are also key. The characteristic locality (Aris quarry) is often a decisive clue. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Windhoekite can be confused with other fibrous minerals, such as palygorskite or sepiolite, which, however, usually have a white, gray, or cream color. Some zeolites (e.g., natrolite, mesolite) also form acicular crystals, but they are usually colorless or white and have a vitreous luster. The golden color and silky luster of windhoekite are quite characteristic. ## Crystal Forms This mineral does not form well-developed, single crystals visible to the naked eye. It occurs exclusively in the form of aggregates composed of microscopic fibers. These aggregates take on radial, matted (felt-like), or chaotic forms resembling cotton wool or hair.
Geological environment
## Genesis Windhoekite is a secondary mineral, formed under low-temperature hydrothermal activity. It crystallizes in cavities and fissures (miaroles) in volcanic rocks, primarily in phonolites. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with a rich assemblage of minerals found in the Aris quarry. The most common associations include aegirine, apophyllite, natrolite, microcline, calcite, quartz, as well as rarer minerals such as tuperssuatsiaite or arisite-(Ce). ## Localities The only confirmed and most important occurrence of windhoekite in the world is the Aris phonolite quarry, located about 25 km south of Windhoek in Namibia. This is the type locality for this mineral.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued windhoekite specimens are characterized by an intense, golden-yellow color and well-formed, dense aggregates of fibers. The attractiveness is enhanced by the presence of the mineral on a contrasting rock matrix, for example, accompanied by white natrolite crystals or green aegirine. The absence of any mechanical damage is crucial – specimens must be in pristine condition, without broken or abraded fibers. ## Popular Localities The only source of collector specimens is the Aris quarry in Namibia. Specimens from this locality are the standard for this mineral, and all valuable examples come from there.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Windhoekite specimens are extremely delicate and brittle. Wet cleaning should be avoided, as, being a hydrated mineral, it may react with water. The safest method for dust removal is to use a soft brush (e.g., a makeup brush) or a very gentle, diffused stream of compressed air from a distance. Ultrasonic cleaners should be absolutely avoided. ## What to Avoid This mineral is sensitive to all mechanical damage – impacts, falls, scratches, or compression. It should be protected from contact with water and all chemical agents, including acids and detergents. It does not require special protection from light or temperature under household conditions. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, padded boxes (e.g., "membrane boxes") or in display cases, in a place protected from vibrations and dust. Due to its brittleness, it is not suitable for free placement on shelves without adequate protection.
