## Characteristics Willemseite is a mineral belonging to the talc group, in which magnesium has been replaced by nickel. It occurs as very fine-grained, scaly or fibrous aggregates, rarely forming crystals visible to the naked eye. Its masses are soft and may feel greasy or soapy to the touch, similar to talc. It is most commonly found in the form of compact, dense masses or thin coatings on other minerals. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by very low hardness, ranging from 2-3 on the Mohs scale, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. It has a pearly, waxy, or dull luster. It is translucent to opaque. Its density is higher than that of talc, approximately 3.35-3.41 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Willemseite has a characteristic apple-green or yellowish-green color, associated with the presence of nickel in its structure. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name honors Johannes Willemse (1909-1970), a South African geologist from the University of Pretoria, who made significant contributions to research on the Bushveld Igneous Complex deposits, where this mineral was first found. It was described and approved as a new mineral in 1968. ## Uses Willemseite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals or nickel minerals.

## Genesis Willemseite is a secondary mineral, formed in the weathering zones of nickel-rich ultramafic igneous rocks, such as dunites or peridotites. It forms as a result of hydrothermal alteration of nickel and magnesium silicates at low temperatures. It can also occur in some metamorphic deposits. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other nickel minerals, such as trevorite, nepouite, pecoraite, as well as with opal, quartz, talc, magnesite, and various iron oxides. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for willemseite is the Scotia Talc Mine near Barberton in Mpumalanga Province, Republic of South Africa. It has also been found in Australia (Mt Windarra nickel mine), Canada (Asbestos region in Quebec), and Zimbabwe.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Willemseite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its low hardness and potential reactivity, avoid washing in water, and especially avoid using any detergents. If it is necessary to remove loose contaminants, compressed air can be used from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid The mineral is very soft and susceptible to scratching and mechanical damage. It should be protected from contact with harder minerals. Avoid contact with acids and other chemicals that may damage it.
