## Identification Key diagnostic features of willemseite include its characteristic apple-green color, very low hardness (easily scratched), and a greasy or soapy feel. It often occurs as fine-grained, compact aggregates. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Willemseite can be confused with other green nickel minerals, such as nepouite, pecoraite, or garnierite (a mixture of minerals). Distinguishing it from these minerals often requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). It is primarily distinguished from talc by its intense green color and higher density. ## Crystal Forms Willemseite crystals are extremely rare and appear as small, tabular or platy forms, visible only under high magnification. It typically forms microcrystalline, scaly or fibrous aggregates and compact, earthy masses.
Geological environment
## Genesis Willemseite is a secondary mineral, formed in the weathering zones of nickel-rich ultramafic igneous rocks, such as dunites or peridotites. It forms as a result of hydrothermal alteration of nickel and magnesium silicates at low temperatures. It can also occur in some metamorphic deposits. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other nickel minerals, such as trevorite, nepouite, pecoraite, as well as with opal, quartz, talc, magnesite, and various iron oxides. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for willemseite is the Scotia Talc Mine near Barberton in Mpumalanga Province, Republic of South Africa. It has also been found in Australia (Mt Windarra nickel mine), Canada (Asbestos region in Quebec), and Zimbabwe.

## Quality Criteria Specimens with an intense, apple-green color and homogeneous structure are most valued by collectors. Due to the rarity of well-formed crystals, even rich, compact aggregates of vibrant color are considered valuable. The attractiveness of a specimen is also enhanced by its association with other rare nickel minerals, such as trevorite. ## Popular Localities By far the most sought-after and classic specimens come from the type locality – the Scotia Talc Mine in South Africa. Material from this location is considered exemplary for this mineral species.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Willemseite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its low hardness and potential reactivity, avoid washing in water, and especially avoid using any detergents. If it is necessary to remove loose contaminants, compressed air can be used from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid The mineral is very soft and susceptible to scratching and mechanical damage. It should be protected from contact with harder minerals. Avoid contact with acids and other chemicals that may damage it. It should not be heated or exposed to prolonged moisture. ## Storage It is recommended to store willemseite specimens in separate, enclosed display boxes, lined with soft material, to prevent abrasion and contamination. It should be protected from dust and moisture.
