It has a vitreous luster and is transparent. Its density is about 2.45 g/cm³, making it relatively light. No colored varieties or trade names are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1963 by Joseph J. Fahey and George Tunell. The name "wegscheiderite" was given in honor of Rudolf Wegscheider (1859–1935), a professor of chemistry at the University of Vienna, in recognition of his fundamental research on the Na₂CO₃-NaHCO₃-H₂O phase system, crucial for understanding the genesis of this type of mineral. ## Applications Wegscheiderite has no industrial applications. ## Identification The key diagnostic feature of wegscheiderite is its environment of occurrence – evaporites of the Green River Formation. Its identification is aided by its low hardness, vitreous luster, and solubility in water (a test that should be performed carefully on a small fragment). It occurs as grains or amorphous masses, rarely forming distinct crystals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Wegscheiderite can be confused with other co-occurring sodium carbonates, such as trona, nahcolite, or thermonatrite, as well as halite. Distinguishing it from these often requires chemical analysis or optical methods. Halite is distinguished by its salty taste and excellent, three-directional cleavage. Trona and nahcolite have different optical properties and crystal forms. ## Crystal Forms The mineral crystallizes in the triclinic system. It is most commonly found in the form of anhedral (undeveloped) grains within the rock mass or as compact, granular aggregates. Very rarely, small, tabular or prismatic crystals are observed.

## Genesis Wegscheiderite is an evaporite mineral. It forms by precipitation from highly saline and alkaline waters in closed lake basins under arid climate conditions. It is a product of the final stages of crystallization of sodium carbonate-rich brines. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in paragenesis with other sodium evaporites. It is most commonly associated with: trona, nahcolite, shortite, eitelite, and halite. ## Localities The only significant and classic locality for wegscheiderite in the world is the Green River Formation, specifically the part located in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, USA. It was discovered there in drill cores from depths of several hundred meters.

## Quality Criteria The collector's value of wegscheiderite is not based on aesthetics but on its rarity and scientific significance. The most important criteria are certainty of identification and accurate documentation of origin (locality, depth). Specimens of greater mass or those containing visible, even if poorly formed, crystals are more highly valued. Samples where wegscheiderite co-occurs with other rare carbonates, such as shortite or eitelite, also have high value. ## Popular Localities For collectors, there is only one important locality from which specimens of this mineral originate: the Green River Formation in Wyoming, USA. Specimens are obtained exclusively from drilling and mining operations conducted in this region.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Wegscheiderite specimens should only be dry-cleaned. A soft brush or a gentle stream of compressed air can be used to remove dust. **Absolutely avoid contact with water and other liquids.** ## What to Avoid The greatest threat to wegscheiderite is water and moisture. Contact with water leads to its rapid dissolution. Even storage in humid air can cause its slow degradation (deliquescence). All chemical agents, ultrasound, and sudden temperature changes should also be avoided. Due to its low hardness, it is susceptible to scratches and mechanical damage. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in a dry place, preferably in a tightly sealed container (e.g., a "membrane box" or a display case with a lid). It is advisable to place a moisture-absorbing agent, such as silica gel, nearby. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
