Wangxibinite is an extremely rare mineral, a natural alloy of titanium and iron, found in ophiolites.

## Characteristics Wangxibinite is a natural alloy of titanium and iron with metallic character. It occurs as very small, anhedral grains, usually as inclusions in other minerals, most often in chromite. Due to its microscopic size, its visual features are difficult to observe without specialized equipment. It is opaque and has a grayish-black color in reflected light. ## Physical Properties The mineral is characterized by a metallic luster. It is completely opaque. Its density, calculated based on chemical composition and crystal structure, is 6.13 g/cm³. Hardness has not been determined due to the microscopic size of the grains. ## Colors and Varieties Wangxibinite has a uniform, grayish-black color. No varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral was officially recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2010. Its name honors the Chinese geologist Wang Xibin, who made significant contributions to the study of the Luobusa ophiolite. It was discovered in chromitites within this ophiolite massif in Tibet (China). ## Applications Wangxibinite has no commercial or industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific, as an indicator of the unique conditions prevailing deep within the Earth's mantle where it formed.

## Identification Identification of wangxibinite is impossible without advanced analytical techniques. Due to its microscopic size and occurrence as inclusions, identification relies on chemical analysis using an electron microprobe (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm its composition (TiFe) and crystal structure. ## Differentiation from Similar Minerals Visually, it is indistinguishable from many other microscopic, metallic minerals (e.g., titanoferrite, some sulfides, or other metal alloys) occurring in similar environments. Differences can only be determined by precise chemical composition analysis. ## Crystal Forms Wangxibinite forms only very fine, irregular grains, not exceeding a few tens of micrometers in size. No well-formed crystals have been observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Wangxibinite forms under extremely reducing conditions in the deep parts of the Earth's mantle. Its presence is associated with ophiolite massifs, which are fragments of oceanic crust and upper mantle uplifted to the continental surface. It crystallizes within chromite-rich rock lenses (chromitites). ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in paragenesis with chromite, in which it forms inclusions, as well as with osbornite, cohenite, wüstite, and other rare alloys and native elements. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of wangxibinite in the world is its type locality – the Luobusa chromite mine in Shigatse Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, China.

## Quality Criteria Since wangxibinite occurs only as microscopic inclusions, collectible specimens are actually fragments of the host rock (chromitite). The value of such a specimen is not based on aesthetic qualities, but on scientific confirmation of the mineral's presence. The most valuable are research samples with precisely described locality and analysis confirming the presence of wangxibinite. ## Popular Localities All known specimens come from one location in the world – the Luobusa ophiolite in Tibet. Material from this locality is extremely difficult to obtain and mainly goes to scientific institutions.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens containing wangxibinite (usually in the form of chromitite rock) should only be cleaned mechanically, using a soft brush or compressed air to remove dust. The use of water is permissible, but ensure the specimen is completely dried. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with all chemicals, especially acids, which can react with associated minerals. Also, protect the specimen from impacts and sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Store in stable room conditions, away from moisture and direct sunlight. It is best to keep it in a closed display box with a label to prevent dust accumulation and mechanical damage.
