No named commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The name "vitusite" comes from Vitus Bering (1681-1741), a Danish explorer and officer of the Russian navy, who explored areas of eastern Siberia and Alaska. The suffix "-(Ce)" indicates the dominance of cerium among rare earth elements in its structure. The mineral was first described in 1976 based on samples from the Ilimaussaq alkaline complex in Greenland. ## Applications Due to its rarity and small crystal size, vitusite-(Ce) has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals and scientists studying the geochemistry of rare earth elements.

Geological environment

## Genesis Vitusite-(Ce) is a magmatic mineral, crystallizing in the late stages from highly differentiated, silica-undersaturated alkaline magmas. It forms in nepheline syenite pegmatites and in hydrothermal veins associated with these intrusions. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with minerals typical of alkaline rocks, such as nepheline, microcline, aegirine, arfvedsonite, eudialyte, lorenzenite, steenstrupine-(Ce), as well as other rare minerals like vuonnemite or lomonosovite. ## Localities The most important and classic localities for this mineral are found in alkaline complexes on the Kola Peninsula in Russia (especially in the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs) and in the Ilimaussaq complex in southern Greenland (the type locality). Occurrences have also been reported in Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec, Canada.

Specimens from Greenland and Mont Saint-Hilaire are also valued, but are usually smaller and less frequently found on the collector's market.
