Diagnostic features
## Identification Field identification of vitusite-(Ce) is difficult due to its rarity and small size. In a collection, it can be recognized by its characteristic, tabular crystals, often forming radial aggregates, pink or brownish color, and occurrence in a specific geological environment (alkaline rocks). Definitive identification requires advanced methods such as chemical analysis (EDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other rare earth element phosphates, such as monazite or xenotime, but differs from them in crystal habit and lower hardness. From eudialyte, with which it often co-occurs, it is distinguished by the absence of a characteristic red color and a different crystal habit. ## Crystal Forms It forms short, prismatic or tabular crystals with a pseudohexagonal cross-section. Crystals often occur as radial or rosette aggregates, as well as granular masses within the rock.
Geological environment
## Genesis Vitusite-(Ce) is a magmatic mineral, crystallizing in the late stages from highly differentiated, silica-undersaturated alkaline magmas. It forms in nepheline syenite pegmatites and in hydrothermal veins associated with these intrusions. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with minerals typical of alkaline rocks, such as nepheline, microcline, aegirine, arfvedsonite, eudialyte, lorenzenite, steenstrupine-(Ce), as well as other rare minerals like vuonnemite or lomonosovite. ## Localities The most important and classic localities for this mineral are found in alkaline complexes on the Kola Peninsula in Russia (especially in the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs) and in the Ilimaussaq complex in southern Greenland (the type locality). Occurrences have also been reported in Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec, Canada.

## Quality Criteria The most desirable specimens for collectors are those with well-formed, sharp crystals of intense, pink color. Rich aggregates of crystals forming aesthetic, radial or rosette forms on a rock matrix are also highly valued. Contrast with other minerals, such as white nepheline or green aegirine, also enhances the visual and collectible value of the specimen. ## Popular Localities The best and most well-known vitusite-(Ce) specimens, often several millimeters in size, come from the Lovozero and Khibiny massifs on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Specimens from Greenland and Mont Saint-Hilaire are also valued, but are usually smaller and less frequently found on the collector's market.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Cleaning is recommended only with a soft brush or compressed air to remove dust. Due to its brittleness and potential reactivity, ultrasonic cleaners and wet cleaning should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids and strong chemical agents, which can damage the mineral's surface.
