Virgilite

Virgilite is a rare lithium aluminum silicate, being the lithium-aluminum analogue of spodumene and occurring as microscopic grains.

## Characteristics Virgilite is a very rare silicate mineral belonging to the pyroxene group. Chemically, it is a lithium aluminum silicate, which makes it a structural analogue of the much better-known spodumene, but with a different crystal symmetry. It typically forms only microscopic, anhedral (irregular) grains, intergrown with other minerals, most often quartz. Due to its size and mode of occurrence, it does not form specimens of visual or traditional collecting significance. ## Physical Properties The mineral is characterized by a hardness of 6-7 on the Mohs scale. It has a vitreous luster and is transparent to translucent. Its density is approximately 2.59 g/cm³. It does not exhibit fluorescence under ultraviolet light. ## Colors and Varieties Observed virgilite grains are usually colorless, white, or have a very pale, pinkish hue. No named varieties of this mineral have been distinguished. ## History and Name Virgilite was first described in 1977 by Donald C. Noble and his colleagues. The mineral is named in honor of Virgil E. Barnes (1903-1998), an American geologist from the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas, in recognition of his contributions to the study of tektites and volcanic rocks. The type locality where this mineral was first identified is Macusani in the Carabaya Province, Peru. ## Uses Virgilite has no commercial or industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific, as an indicator of specific geochemical conditions (high lithium activity) in magmatic and metamorphic processes.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of virgilite is impossible without advanced laboratory techniques, such as chemical analysis (electron microprobe) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In granular form, it is visually indistinguishable from many other light-colored minerals, such as quartz, feldspars, or other pyroxenes. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Virgilite is most often confused with quartz, in which it occurs, and with spodumene, with which it shares chemical composition. It is distinguished from quartz by the presence of lithium and aluminum in chemical analysis. From spodumene, which crystallizes in the monoclinic system, it is distinguished by its hexagonal crystal structure, which can only be determined by XRD. ## Crystal Forms This mineral occurs almost exclusively as very small, anhedral grains or granular aggregates, disseminated in the host rock. No well-formed, idiomorphic crystals have been observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Virgilite crystallizes under specific conditions, in lithium- and silica-rich magmatic or metamorphic environments. It forms in acidic volcanic rocks, such as rhyolites, as well as in lithium pegmatites and some metamorphic rocks that have undergone lithium metasomatism. It is a high-temperature mineral. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with quartz, sanidine, albite, muscovite, lepidolite, spodumene, and other lithium minerals. ## Localities The most important and confirmed occurrences of virgilite are: - Macusani, Carabaya Province, Peru - type locality, in rhyolitic obsidians. - Localities in the United States, including pegmatites in the Tanco area in Manitoba (Canada) and pegmatites in South Dakota (USA). - Some lithium pegmatites in Afghanistan.

## Quality Criteria Virgilite is not a mineral collected for individual specimens. Its value is purely scientific. In specialized or institutional collections, rock fragments (usually polished slabs or samples for research) with analytically confirmed virgilite presence, originating from a well-documented locality, especially the type locality in Peru, are valued.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its occurrence as microscopic inclusions within the host rock, individual virgilite grains are not subject to cleaning. A rock specimen containing virgilite can be cleaned standardly, depending on the dominant mineral (e.g., quartz can be washed with soap and water using a soft brush). ## What to Avoid Aggressive chemicals and acids, which could damage the host rock, should be avoided. Although virgilite itself is relatively hard and stable, its mineral environment may be sensitive. ## Storage Rock specimens with virgilite should be stored under standard conditions for mineralogical collections: in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and dust. It is best to store them in labeled boxes, given the microscopic nature of the mineral.
