Villiaumite is a rare mineral from the halide group, a sodium fluoride, valued for its intense, carmine-red color and strong fluorescence.

## Characteristics Villiaumite is sodium fluoride (NaF), making it the mineralogical equivalent of the synthetic compound used, among other things, in toothpastes. However, it occurs relatively rarely in nature. It most often forms small, cubic crystals, which rarely exceed a few millimeters, although centimeter-sized specimens are known. It is usually found in the form of granular aggregates or as inclusions in the host rock, which it intensely stains red. Its most characteristic feature is its vivid, dark red to carmine color. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 2-2.5. It has excellent cubic cleavage, meaning it easily breaks along three mutually perpendicular planes, forming cube- or parallelepiped-shaped fragments. Villiaumite has a vitreous luster. It is a light mineral, with a density similar to rock salt (halite). ## Colors and Varieties The dominant and essentially only natural color of villiaumite is an intense red in various shades: from orange-red, through carmine, to dark cherry. This color is so characteristic that it constitutes its main identifying feature. No color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name Villiaumite was first described in 1908 by Alfred Lacroix. The mineral is named in honor of Charles Maxime Villiaume, a French traveler and collector, who collected the first samples on Roume Island (part of the Îles de Los archipelago) in Guinea. ## Uses Due to its rarity, softness, and water solubility, villiaumite has no industrial applications. However, it is a prized and sought-after collector's stone, mainly because of its intense color and interesting origin.

Diagnostic features

## Identification The most important diagnostic feature of villiaumite is its intense, carmine-red color. This mineral also exhibits strong, orange to reddish-orange fluorescence under ultraviolet light (both longwave and shortwave). Its excellent cubic cleavage is visible on damaged fragments, which break to form smooth, shiny surfaces at 90-degree angles. It is very soft – it can be scratched with a fingernail. The taste is bitter and astringent, but taste testing is strongly discouraged due to the toxicity of fluorine. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals - **Eudialyte**: Often co-occurs with villiaumite and has a similar red color, but is significantly harder (approx. 5-5.5 on the Mohs scale) and does not exhibit such excellent cleavage. - **Cinnabar**: Has a similar red color and is soft, but has a much higher density and a different crystal structure. - **Realgar**: Is also a soft, red mineral, but is unstable in light (decomposes to pararealgar) and has a different chemical composition (arsenic sulfide). ## Crystal forms Villiaumite crystallizes in the isometric system, most often forming simple cubic crystals. Octahedra or combined forms are less common. It usually occurs as small grains embedded in rock or as granular aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Villiaumite is a magmatic mineral, crystallizing in the late stages from strongly silica-undersaturated, alkaline magmas. It forms in nepheline syenite pegmatites and in deep-seated rocks of the same type. Its presence indicates an extremely high concentration of fluorine and sodium in the final post-magmatic fluids. ## Mineral associations This mineral often co-occurs with other rare alkaline minerals. Typical associated minerals include eudialyte, aegirine, nepheline, sodalite, arfvedsonite, lorenzenite, lamprophyllite, as well as fluorite and microcline. ## Localities The most important and best-known localities worldwide, providing the finest collector specimens, are found in alkaline massifs on the Kola Peninsula in Russia (mainly the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs). Most of the material available on the market comes from there. Other significant localities include: - The Mont Saint-Hilaire igneous complex in Quebec, Canada, where it occurs as small but well-formed crystals. - The type locality on Roume Island in Guinea. - The Ilimaussaq complex in Greenland.

## Quality criteria The most important factor influencing the collector's value of villiaumite is the intensity and saturation of its color – specimens with a deep, carmine-red color are most desirable. Well-formed, sharp cubic crystals, which are rare, are also highly prized. Transparency is of great importance; clear, gemmy fragments, even small ones, are much more valuable than opaque, granular masses. The attractiveness of a specimen is also enhanced by a contrasting, light rock matrix (e.g., white nepheline) on which the red crystals are embedded. ## Market prices Villiaumite prices vary widely. Small, granular specimens in host rock from the Kola Peninsula can be purchased for several tens to several hundreds of Polish zlotys. Prices increase with the size and quality of the crystals. Specimens with well-formed, transparent cubes several millimeters on a side can cost from several hundred to several thousand Polish zlotys. Exceptional, large crystals or rich crystalline groups on matrix can reach prices of several tens of thousands of Polish zlotys or more. ## Popular localities By far the most valued and sought-after specimens by collectors come from Russia, from the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs on the Kola Peninsula. Material from Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada, although usually in the form of smaller crystals, is also highly prized due to its perfect formation and classic locality.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Villiaumite is water-soluble, so **it must absolutely not be cleaned wet**. Contact with water, even a damp cloth, will cause it to dull and gradually dissolve. The only safe method for removing dust is to use a soft, dry brush or gently blow it off with compressed air from a safe distance. ## What to avoid - **Water and moisture**: The greatest threat. The mineral is hygroscopic and can absorb moisture from the air, leading to its degradation. Avoid storing it in damp rooms. - **High temperature**: May cause color change. - **Sunlight**: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the intense red color to fade. - **Chemicals**: Avoid contact with acids, bases, and all cleaning agents. ## Storage Villiaumite specimens should be stored in a dry place, preferably in a sealed, lockable display box with a desiccant (e.g., silica gel). Display should be in a closed cabinet, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Due to its softness and excellent cleavage, it should be protected from impacts and contact with harder minerals.
