Vigrishinite is a very rare titanosilicate mineral with a complex composition, forming small, prismatic, brown crystals.

## Characteristics Vigrishinite is a complex titanosilicate from the murmanite group, characterized by the presence of zinc, sodium, and titanium. It occurs as very small, prismatic or lath-like crystals, reaching sizes up to 0.3 x 0.1 x 0.03 mm. The crystals are often flattened and elongated, forming small aggregates or appearing as single individuals embedded in the host rock. Due to its microscopic size, visual features are difficult to observe without magnification. ## Physical Properties Vigrishinite crystals exhibit a vitreous luster. They are transparent to translucent. The Mohs hardness is approximately 3, and the density has been calculated at 3.12 g/cm³. The mineral is brittle and has perfect cleavage in one direction. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral has a characteristic brown color in various shades, from light brown to reddish-brown. The streak is light brown. No color varieties or commercial varieties have been described. ## History and Name The mineral's name, approved by IMA in 2008 (IMA2008-042), comes from the surname of Galina Anatolievna Vigrishina (Russian: Галина Анатольевна Вигришина, 1946–2005), a Russian crystallographer from the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry (IGEM) of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. She was honored for her contribution to the study of minerals from the lomonosovite group.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of vigrishinite is possible only through advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). Visual identification in the field or even in a collection is impossible due to the microscopic size of the crystals and their similarity to other minerals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other titanosilicates occurring in the same environment, such as epistolite, murmanite, or lorenzenite. Differentiation requires specialized laboratory tests to determine the exact chemical composition and crystal structure. ## Crystal Forms Vigrishinite forms very small, elongated, and flattened crystals with a lath-like or prismatic habit. Crystals are usually single, embedded in other minerals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Vigrishinite forms under hydrothermal conditions in alkaline pegmatites that cut nepheline syenite massifs. It is a late-stage crystallization mineral, forming in rock cavities and fissures. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with a number of other rare minerals typical of alkaline pegmatites. In the type locality (Mount Alluaiw), it was found in association with aegirine, eudialyte, nepheline, microcline, lorenzenite, sodalite, kazakovite, umbite, kostylevite, and tsepinite-Na. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of vigrishinite in the world is its type locality: Mount Alluaiw in the Lovozero Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. This is a classic locality for many rare alkaline minerals.

## Quality Criteria As a microscopic mineral, vigrishinite is primarily valued by collectors specializing in "micromounts" and systematic and rare minerals. The most highly rated specimens are those where vigrishinite crystals, despite their small size, are well-formed, undamaged, and clearly visible against a contrasting rock matrix. The presence of rich associations with other rare minerals from this locality is also important. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is Mount Alluaiw in the Lovozero Massif in Russia. All specimens available on the collector's market come from this single location.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the extreme rarity, brittleness, and microscopic size of the crystals, mechanical cleaning is not recommended. Specimens should be left intact, in the host rock. If absolutely necessary, compressed air (from a safe distance) can be used to remove loose dust. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with any chemicals, including acids and bases. Do not use ultrasonic cleaners. The mineral is brittle, so avoid shocks, impacts, and scratches. Protect it from moisture and sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Vigrishinite specimens should be stored exclusively in specialized "micromount" boxes, which protect them from mechanical damage and dust. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and store in stable humidity and temperature conditions.
