Velikite is an extremely rare copper, mercury, and tin sulfide, occurring as microscopic, steel-gray grains.

Description

## Characteristics Velikite is a sulfide with a metallic luster and a steel-gray to black color. It occurs exclusively as very small, irregular (anhedral) grains, not exceeding 0.2 mm in size. It most often forms intergrowths with other minerals, especially cinnabar and stannite, or occurs as thin rims around stannite grains. Due to its microscopic size, its features are only observable under high magnification. ## Physical Properties This mineral is opaque and has a black streak. Its Mohs hardness is 4, and its density, calculated based on chemical composition, is 5.75 g/cm³. It shows no cleavage, and its fracture is conchoidal. ## Colors and Varieties Velikite has a uniform, steel-gray to black color. No color varieties or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name, approved by the IMA in 1996, honors Anatoliy Stepanovich Velikiy (1913-1970), a Russian geologist and researcher of mercury and antimony deposits in Central Asia. It was discovered in the Khaydarkan mercury-antimony deposit in Kyrgyzstan. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence as microscopic grains, velikite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific research and is valued by specialized collectors of rare minerals (so-called micromounts).

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of velikite based on visual characteristics is practically impossible due to its microscopic size and similarity to other sulfides. Certain identification requires advanced analytical techniques, such as micro-area chemical composition analysis (electron microprobe, EDS), which confirms its unique chemical composition (Cu-Hg-Sn-S). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Velikite can be confused with other associated, dark-colored metallic minerals, such as stannite, sphalerite, galena, or chalcopyrite. It differs from stannite (Cu₂FeSnS₄) by the presence of mercury instead of iron. It differs from cinnabar (HgS) by its color (cinnabar is red) and composition. It differs from other sulfides by its unique combination of copper, mercury, and tin. ## Crystal Forms This mineral does not form well-developed crystals. It occurs exclusively as irregular, rounded grains and aggregates, often as reaction rims around stannite crystals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Velikite forms under hydrothermal conditions, in low-sulfur mercury-antimony-fluorite-carbonate type ore veins. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with cinnabar, stannite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, fluorite, calcite, quartz, and antimonite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of velikite in the world is its type locality – the Khaydarkan mercury and antimony deposit in the Fergana Valley, Batken Region, Kyrgyzstan.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Velikite specimens, due to their microscopic size and fragility, should not be cleaned mechanically. Any attempt at cleaning may lead to damage or loss of the mineral. If necessary, the specimen can be very carefully rinsed with distilled water and left to dry. ## What to Avoid As a sulfide, this mineral may be sensitive to acids and strong oxidizers. Contact with chemicals, ultrasound, and sudden temperature changes should be avoided. Due to its mercury content, caution is advised when handling the mineral, although the risk with such small quantities is negligible. ## Storage Velikite specimens should be stored in stable conditions, away from dust and moisture. The safest way is to place them in specialized micromineral boxes (micromounts), which protect against mechanical damage and loss.
