Veatchite is a rare strontium borate, forming colorless or white, tabular crystals with a pearly luster.

## Characteristics Veatchite is a hydrated strontium borate, belonging to the group of rare minerals. It occurs as small, tabular or bladed crystals, often gathered into rosette-like or felted aggregates. Crystals are usually colorless, white, or grayish, sometimes with a yellowish tint. A characteristic feature is their perfect cleavage in one direction, which gives the crystal surfaces a pearly luster. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 2. It is transparent to translucent. The luster on cleavage surfaces is distinctly pearly, while on other surfaces and fractures it can be vitreous to dull. It is a light mineral, with a density close to 2.6-2.8 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Veatchite does not form colored varieties. Its coloration is limited to white, shades of gray, and colorless. Sometimes it is stained yellow by inclusions of other minerals. ## History and Name The mineral was discovered in 1938 in borate deposits in Los Angeles County, California, USA. Its name honors John Allen Veatch (1808–1870), who first discovered commercial boron deposits in California. It was described by mineralogists George Switzer and William F. Foshag. ## Uses Due to its rarity and small crystal size, Veatchite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors of rare minerals and scientists.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Veatchite can be identified by its characteristic tabular crystal habit, perfect cleavage in one direction, and strong pearly luster on cleavage planes. Its low hardness (2 on the Mohs scale) is also an important diagnostic feature. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other white, tabular minerals with a pearly luster, such as talc or some micas. It is distinguished from them by its geological context (occurrence in borate evaporites) and specific physical properties, which, however, may require laboratory analysis for final confirmation. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are typically thin-tabular, elongated, with a bladed habit. They often form fan-shaped, radial, or rosette-like aggregates. They also occur as felted, fibrous aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Veatchite is an evaporitic mineral. It forms through crystallization from solutions rich in boron and strontium in drying sedimentary basins (borate lakes). It forms in salt deposits, mainly in clays and mudstones. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with other borate minerals, such as colemanite, howlite, ulexite, as well as gypsum and calcite. ## Localities The most important and classic locality, from which the best specimens originate, are the boron mines in the Kramer area in Kern County and in Los Angeles County, California, USA. This mineral has also been found in borate deposits in Reynales, Mexico, and in Kazakhstan.

## Quality Criteria The most prized by collectors are specimens with well-formed, sharp crystals forming aesthetic, rosette-like or fan-shaped aggregates. The size of the crystals and the absence of mechanical damage are also important. Specimens on a rock matrix, contrasting with it, are more highly valued than single, loose crystals. ## Popular Localities By far the most desirable specimens come from the classic localities in California, USA, especially from the Kramer area. They are considered exemplary for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Veatchite specimens are very soft and delicate. They should be cleaned only with a soft brush to remove dust. The use of water is not recommended, as the mineral is partially soluble. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water and any chemicals. The crystals are brittle and sensitive to mechanical damage, scratches, and temperature changes. Specimens should not be exposed to direct sunlight. ## Storage Veatchite specimens should be stored under stable conditions, in a dry place, preferably in a closed display box, to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage.
