This is an extremely rare, complex mercury oxyhalide, found as microscopic, yellow to orange grains and aggregates.

## Characteristics Vasilyevite is a halide mineral, specifically a complex mercury oxyhalide with additional iodide, bromide, chloride, and carbonate anions. It occurs as very fine, anhedral (not exhibiting its own crystallographic forms) grains ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 mm in size. These grains often form dense, massive aggregates. Its structure and chemical composition make it one of the more complex mercury minerals. ## Physical Properties Due to the microscopic size of its crystals, many physical properties have not been fully determined. The mineral exhibits an adamantine luster. It is opaque. The density calculated based on the chemical formula and unit cell parameters is approximately 9.58 g/cm³, making it one of the densest known minerals. ## Colors and Varieties Vasilyevite has a characteristic, intense color ranging from yellow to orange-yellow. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was named in honor of the Russian geologist and mineralogist Viktor Ivanovich Vasilyev (1929–1995), a specialist in the geology and mineralogy of mercury deposits. It was approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2003. The type locality is the Arzak prospect in the Tuva Republic, Russia. ## Uses Vasilyevite has no industrial application. Due to its extreme rarity, microscopic size, and toxic chemical composition (mercury), it is of purely scientific interest and is an object of interest for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Field identification of vasilyevite is impossible. Identification requires advanced laboratory methods, such as chemical analysis (EDS) to confirm the presence of mercury, iodine, bromine, and chlorine, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine the crystal structure. In a collection, it can be identified based on the label and confirmed locality. Its characteristic yellow-orange color and occurrence in association with other mercury minerals are indicative. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other rare, yellow or orange mercury minerals, such as kuznetsovite, shakhovite, or eglestonite, which occur in similar environments. Definitive differentiation is possible only through chemical and structural analysis, as these minerals often co-occur as microscopic intergrowths. ## Crystal Forms Vasilyevite forms exclusively anhedral, irregular grains and massive, earthy, or powdery aggregates. No well-formed crystals have been observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Vasilyevite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation (supergene) zones of mercury deposits. It forms as a result of the weathering of primary mercury sulfides, mainly cinnabar, in the presence of solutions rich in halides (iodine, bromine, chlorine). ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other secondary mercury minerals. At the type locality (Arzak, Russia), it has been found in association with calomel, native mercury, eglestonite, terlinguaite, kuznetsovite, shakhovite, poyarkovite, as well as with cinnabar (primary mineral), quartz, and barite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of vasilyevite in the world is its type locality – the Arzak prospect (deposit) in the Tuva Republic, Siberia, Russia.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a vasilyevite specimen is determined by the richness and visibility of the aggregates on the rock matrix. Since the mineral occurs as microscopic grains, specimens where it forms distinct, colorful coatings or aggregates, contrasting well with the host rock, are most valued. Association with other rare mercury minerals is also important, increasing the scientific and collector's value of the specimen. ## Popular Localities The only source of vasilyevite specimens is the Arzak prospect in Russia. Material from this locality is extremely difficult to acquire and appears on the collector's market sporadically.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Vasilyevite specimens should not be cleaned. Any attempts at mechanical or chemical cleaning may destroy the delicate, microscopic grains. The mineral should be left undisturbed on the rock matrix. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, acids, and other chemicals should be strictly avoided. The mineral is potentially unstable and may react to environmental changes. Due to its mercury content, heating should be avoided, as it could release toxic fumes. It should be protected from vibrations and impacts. ## Storage Vasilyevite must be stored in a sealed, stable container, preferably a "micromount" box, to protect it from physical damage and dust. Due to mercury toxicity, the container should be clearly labeled. Store in a dry place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
