Usowite is a very rare, colorless or white fluoride of barium, calcium, magnesium, and aluminum, occurring as fine aggregates and crystals.
Description
## Characteristics Usowite is a complex fluoride that, in its pure form, is colorless or white. It typically forms fine-grained, earthy, or felted aggregates. Less commonly, it occurs as small, tabular or short-prismatic crystals, usually not exceeding a few millimeters in size. The mineral exhibits a vitreous luster on crystal faces and fracture surfaces. ## Physical Properties Its Mohs hardness is 3.5, making it a relatively soft mineral, susceptible to scratching. The density is quite high for a light-colored mineral, approximately 4.01 g/cm³. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one direction. It is transparent to translucent. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral occurs almost exclusively in white or is colorless. No colored varieties or trade names are distinguished. ## History and Name Usowite was first described in 1966. Its name honors Mikhail Antonovich Usov (1883-1939), a prominent Russian geologist and academician specializing in the geology of Siberia. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity, usowite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a prized acquisition for advanced systematic mineral collections.

## Identification Field identification of usowite is practically impossible without specialized equipment. Key diagnostic features include its high density, low hardness, perfect cleavage, and specific occurrence environment. Definitive identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical analysis. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Usowite can be confused with other rare fluorides occurring in the same paragenesis, such as cryolite, jarlite, weberite, or thomsenolite. Distinguishing it from these minerals based on visual characteristics is very difficult. It differs from them in density, optical properties, and crystal structure, which, however, requires laboratory examination. ## Crystal Forms Usowite crystals are rare and usually small, with a tabular or short-prismatic habit. Most often, it occurs as fine-grained, felted, or massive aggregates.

## Genesis Usowite is a hydrothermal or metasomatic mineral. It forms in complex geological environments, typically associated with alkaline massifs and carbonatites, rich in fluorine. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other, often rare, fluorides. Its typical associated minerals include fluorite, cryolite, weberite, jarlite, thomsenolite, pachnolite, ralstonite, and gearksutite. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for usowite is its type locality – the Narsarsuk alkaline complex in Greenland. Significant specimens also come from the Aksu deposit in Kazakhstan. These are the main sources of specimens of this mineral worldwide.

## Quality Criteria The most highly prized usowite specimens are those that contain well-formed, even if small, free-standing crystals. Since this mineral most often forms amorphous aggregates, any specimen with visible crystals is a rarity. The value is also enhanced by a rich association with other rare fluorides, especially if usowite is clearly visible on them. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the type locality, Narsarsuk in Greenland, are considered the most desirable among collectors. Material from Kazakhstan is somewhat more common on the market, but Greenlandic specimens have classic status.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Usowite specimens should be cleaned with great care, using a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, it can be carefully rinsed with distilled water. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they can damage the specimen due to its cleavage. ## What to Avoid The mineral is relatively soft (hardness 3.5), so it should be protected from contact with harder minerals that could scratch it. Contact with strong acids should be avoided. It is stable under normal conditions, but extreme temperatures should be avoided. ## Storage It is recommended to store usowite specimens separately, in a padded display box, to prevent scratches and accidental impacts.
