Tuscanite is a rare sulfate silicate that forms colorless or white, tabular crystals with a pearly luster.

## Characteristics Tuscanite is a complex hydrated potassium and calcium silicate, also containing sulfate and carbonate groups. It occurs as very small, thin, tabular crystals, typically gathered in rosette-like or spherical aggregates. Individual crystals rarely exceed 1-2 mm. It is colorless to white, often with a pearly luster on cleavage surfaces. ## Physical Properties Tuscanite crystals are very brittle and soft, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 2. They are characterized by perfect cleavage in one direction, which, combined with the pearly luster, is its distinguishing feature. The mineral's density is about 2.89 g/cm³. It is transparent to translucent. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is usually colorless or white. No color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name It was first described in 1977 by Stefano Orlandi, Stefano Merlino, Marco Mellini, and Paolo Orlandi. Its name comes from Tuscany, a region in Italy, where its type locality, the Pitigliano quarry, is located. ## Uses Tuscanite has no industrial application. It is solely a mineral of scientific and collector's interest, sought after for its rarity and aesthetic aggregates.

## Identification Characteristic features of tuscanite include its habit in the form of thin, tabular crystals, often forming rosette aggregates, perfect cleavage in one direction, and a strong, pearly luster on cleavage planes. It is very soft and brittle. It occurs in a specific environment – in volcanic rock cavities rich in leucite. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other zeolitic minerals or silicates of similar habit, such as heulandite or stilbite, but it is distinguished by a stronger pearly luster and specific genesis. Gypsum can also form similar shapes but is even softer. Final differentiation often requires advanced analytical methods. ## Crystal Forms Tuscanite forms very thin, tabular crystals with a rhombic or hexagonal outline. These crystals almost always occur as fan-shaped, rosette-like, or spherulitic aggregates, growing on the walls of rock cavities.

Geological environment

## Genesis Tuscanite is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the late stage of crystallization in vesicles and cavities in volcanic rocks rich in leucite, such as leucite tephrites. It crystallizes from solutions rich in potassium, calcium, silica, and sulfates. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with other minerals filling cavities in volcanic rocks, such as thaumasite, tobermorite, apophyllite, phillipsite, chabazite, willhendersonite, and calcite. ## Localities It is a very rare mineral. The most important and classic localities are in Italy, in the Lazio and Tuscany regions, including the Pitigliano quarry (type locality), Vetralla, Sacrofano, and Campagnano. It is also known from the Eifel volcanic complex in Germany.

## Quality Criteria The most valued tuscanite specimens are those with well-formed, sharp, and undamaged rosette aggregates at least several millimeters in diameter. A high pearly luster and contrast with the rock matrix are important. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, specimens are primarily evaluated under magnification. Contrasting associations with other rare minerals, e.g., thaumasite, increase the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities The best and most sought-after tuscanite specimens come from classic localities in Italy, especially from the Vetralla and Pitigliano areas. Specimens from these locations are considered the global standard for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Tuscanite specimens are extremely delicate and brittle. Mechanical cleaning should be avoided. If absolutely necessary, compressed air (from a safe distance) can be used to remove dust. Contact with water is inadvisable due to the mineral's possible reactivity and delicacy. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, acids, and other chemicals must be strictly avoided. The mineral is very soft and susceptible to mechanical damage, shocks, and scratches. It should not be heated or exposed to temperature changes. ## Storage Specimens should be stored under stable conditions, in closed, padded "micromount" boxes to protect them from dust, moisture, and physical damage. It is not suitable for display in open showcases.
