Tsumgallite is an extremely rare gallium oxyhydroxide, forming white, spherulitic aggregates, known primarily from the Tsumeb mine in Namibia.

## Characteristics Tsumgallite is a gallium oxyhydroxide, a mineralogical rarity. It occurs as small, spherical aggregates (spherulites) with a diameter not exceeding 1-2 mm. These aggregates have a radial-fibrous structure and are composed of microscopic, acicular crystals. Its appearance is subtle, and specimens are primarily of scientific importance. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a silky luster on the surfaces of the spherulites. It is translucent and relatively soft, with a hardness estimated at about 3 on the Mohs scale. Its density is quite high, at 4.66 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Tsumgallite is a mineral of uniform color. It is observed exclusively in shades of white, from pure white to creamy. No colored or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name The name of the mineral refers to its discovery location and chemical composition. The first part, "Tsum", comes from the Tsumeb mine in Namibia, which is its type locality. The second part, "gall", refers to gallium (Latin: *gallium*), which is its main component. Tsumgallite was officially recognized as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2002. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence in small specimens, tsumgallite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of scientific interest and is valued by specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification A characteristic feature of tsumgallite is its mode of occurrence – white, silky spherulites with a radial structure. However, a key diagnostic element is its paragenesis, i.e., its co-occurrence with other rare gallium and germanium minerals, such as gallite, germanite, or söhngeite, in the specific environment of the Tsumeb deposit. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Tsumgallite can be visually confused with other white secondary minerals forming spherulitic aggregates, such as calcite, aragonite, or some zeolites. However, its significantly higher density and unique occurrence environment allow for preliminary differentiation. Certain identification is only possible using advanced analytical methods, such as energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms This mineral forms almost exclusively spherulitic aggregates composed of tightly packed, elongated, fibrous or acicular crystals. Single, well-formed crystals are extremely rare and microscopic in size.

Geological environment

## Genesis Tsumgallite is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation zone (gossan) of complex, polymetallic ore deposits. Its formation is associated with the weathering processes of primary sulfides rich in gallium and germanium under low-temperature conditions. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare minerals of the oxidation zone, especially those containing gallium and germanium. Its most common associations include söhngeite, gallite, germanite, and tennantite. ## Localities The most important and historically first occurrence of tsumgallite is the Tsumeb mine in the Otjikoto region of Namibia, which is its type locality. This is the only locality from which collectible specimens originate. It has also been reported from the Kipushi mine in Haut-Katanga Province (Democratic Republic of Congo).

## Quality Criteria In the case of such a rare mineral as tsumgallite, the main criterion for value is its mere presence on a fragment of the host rock. Specimens on which the spherulites are numerous, well-formed, and undamaged are more highly valued. Rich associations with other rare gallium and germanium minerals are particularly desirable, as they increase the scientific and collectible value of the specimen. ## Popular Localities The only source of collectible tsumgallite specimens is the historic Tsumeb mine in Namibia. Specimens from this locality are considered classic and most sought after by specialized collectors.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Tsumgallite specimens should be cleaned with the utmost care, only mechanically, using a soft brush to remove dust. Compressed air may be used from a safe distance. Due to its fragility and rarity, washing in water, especially in ultrasonic cleaners, should be avoided. ## What to Avoid This mineral is potentially sensitive to acids and other chemicals. It should be protected from all cleaning agents, high temperatures, and sudden temperature changes. Due to its low hardness, it is susceptible to scratches and mechanical damage. ## Storage The best way to store tsumgallite is to place it in a closed, padded "micromount" box, which protects it from dust, light, and damage. Each specimen should be properly labeled, including its locality.
