Tounkite is a very rare mineral from the cancrinite group, closely related to lazurite, forming blue, granular aggregates in metamorphic rocks.

Diagnostic features
## Identification Identifying tounkite is extremely difficult and practically impossible without advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). In collector conditions, identification relies mainly on a label from a reputable source confirming the analysis. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals Tounkite is macroscopically indistinguishable from lazurite, with which it forms a continuous isomorphic series. It often coexists with lazurite, sodalite, afghanite, and other blue feldspathoids, from which it can only be separated by laboratory methods. It differs from them by subtle proportions of chemical components and unit cell parameters. ## Crystal Forms Tounkite crystallizes in the hexagonal system. It is most commonly found in the form of anhedral (undeveloped) grains and massive, granular aggregates within the host rock. Poorly developed, small crystals are rarely observed.
Geological environment
## Genesis Tounkite is a mineral of metamorphic origin. It forms as a result of contact metamorphism of limestones and dolomites under the influence of alkaline rock intrusions, such as syenites. It is a component of rocks referred to as lazurites (lapis-lazuli). ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other feldspathoids and minerals typical of lazurite rocks. It most commonly coexists with lazurite, calcite, diopside, phlogopite, pyrite, sodalite, and afghanite. ## Localities The most important and classic tounkite localities are in Russia, in the Baikal region (Tounka River valley, Malo-Bystrinskoe). Its occurrence has also been confirmed in the famous lapis-lazuli deposits in the Sar-e Sang mine in Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan, as well as in Tajikistan (Pamir Mountains) and Italy (Lazio).

## Quality Criteria The quality of a tounkite specimen is determined by the intensity and uniformity of its blue color and its abundance in the host rock. Since this mineral is only analytically identifiable, specimens from reputable localities with an accompanying analysis certificate confirming its identity are of the highest value. Contrast with a white calcite matrix or golden pyrite enhances aesthetic appeal. ## Popular Localities The most prized specimens by collectors come from the type locality in Russia (Baikal region) and from the historic lapis-lazuli deposits in Afghanistan (Sar-e Sang), from which the world's most famous lazurites, which also contain tounkite, originate.
Care and storage
## Cleaning It is recommended to clean tounkite specimens only with a soft, dry brush to remove dust. Avoid contact with water and any chemical agents. ## What to avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids, which can damage it. Avoid sudden temperature changes and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which theoretically may affect its color. Protect from moisture. ## Storage Tounkite specimens are best stored in stable conditions, in closed display boxes or cabinets, away from sources of moisture, dust, and direct light. Due to its fragility, avoid placing it in contact with harder minerals.
