Tongxinite is an extremely rare natural copper-zinc alloy, occurring as microscopic, coppery-red grains.
Description
## Characteristics Tongxinite is a natural alloy (brass) of copper and zinc. It occurs as very small, anhedral grains, typically not exceeding 0.2 mm in size. It is characterized by a metallic luster and an intense, coppery-red color, resembling native copper in appearance. ## Physical Properties This mineral is opaque. Its hardness is estimated at approximately 4 on the Mohs scale. The density has not been measured directly but is calculated to be 8.27 g/cm³, which is a significant value, typical for metal alloys. ## Colors and Varieties Tongxinite has a consistent, characteristic coppery-red color. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name, approved in 1984, comes from its discovery location – the Tongxin region in China (Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region). ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, tongxinite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific and collecting interest.

## Identification Amateur identification of tongxinite is practically impossible due to its microscopic size. Recognition is based on its coppery-red color, metallic luster, and specific occurrence environment (in chromitite). Final confirmation requires advanced analytical techniques, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Tongxinite is visually almost identical to native copper. Certain distinction is only possible based on chemical composition – the presence of zinc as a key alloy component. It can also be confused with other rare copper alloys. ## Crystal Forms This mineral forms only very fine, anhedral grains intergrown with other minerals.
Geological environment
## Genesis Tongxinite forms under specific conditions in ultramafic rocks. It has been found in podiform chromite deposits (chromitite bodies) contained within serpentinized dunite. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with chromite, as well as with platinum-group minerals (iridium, rutheniridosmine, laurite), diopside, forsterite, andradite, and uvarovite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for tongxinite in the world is its type locality – the chromite deposit in the Tongxin region, China.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a tongxinite specimen is primarily determined by the mere presence of analytically confirmed grains. Due to the microscopic nature of the mineral, specimens with larger (though still small) or more numerous grains are more desirable. The aesthetics of the host rock (chromitite) are of secondary importance. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality in China, making the material extremely difficult to acquire.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Tongxinite specimens are typically micromounts that should not be cleaned in a traditional manner. Any contact with water or chemicals is inadvisable. Dust can only be removed using a soft brush or a photographic air blower. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with moisture, acids, and other chemical reagents that could cause oxidation or damage to the delicate grains. Do not heat the specimen. ## Storage Specimens should be stored under stable conditions, preferably in a tightly sealed micromount box, to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage.
