Tondiite is a very rare halide mineral, forming small, hexagonal crystals of an intense blue-green color.

## Characteristics Tondiite is a rare secondary copper mineral, occurring as small, hexagonal, tabular crystals. These crystals are typically very small, not exceeding 0.2 mm, and form rosette-like or radial aggregates. Due to its intense, blue-green color, it is a visually distinctive mineral, despite its small size. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a vitreous luster and is transparent. Its hardness and density have not been precisely determined due to the small size of the crystals, which prevents standard testing. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one plane. ## Colors and Varieties Tondiite occurs in a uniform, vivid, blue-green color. No color varieties or commercial forms are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery locality – the Tondi mine, located within the former Lavrion iron ore mine in Greece. It was officially approved as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2006. It was described by a team of mineralogists, including Uwe Kolitsch and Heinz-Jürgen Bernhardt. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic crystal size, tondiite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals and scientists studying ore deposit mineralogy.

Preliminary identification is based on its characteristic blue-green color, hexagonal crystal outline, tabular habit, and co-occurrence with other rare minerals from Lavrion. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Tondiite can be confused with other secondary copper minerals of similar color, such as atacamite, paratacamite, clinoatacamite, or herbertsmithite, which also occur in Lavrion. Definitive differentiation is only possible based on crystal structure and chemical composition analysis. ## Crystal Forms Tondiite forms very small, hexagonal, tabular crystals, often grouped into rosette-like or radial aggregates. Crystals rarely occur individually.

## Genesis Tondiite is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation zones of polymetallic deposits. Its formation results from the action of saline seawater on ancient, antique metallurgical slags left by miners in the Lavrion area. These reactions lead to the formation of a wide range of rare halides and sulfates. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare secondary minerals, such as herbertsmithite, clinoatacamite, gypsum, anglesite, and chalcanthite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of tondiite in the world is its type locality – the Tondi mine in the Lavrion district, Attica region, Greece. This mineral is found in ancient metallurgical slags that have reacted with seawater.

## Quality Criteria For tondiite collectors, the most important criterion is the quality and richness of crystal aggregates on the matrix. Specimens with well-formed, undamaged crystals forming aesthetic groups are sought after. Due to their microscopic size, evaluation is done under high magnification. Color contrast with the rock matrix also enhances the specimen's attractiveness. ## Popular Localities The only source of tondiite specimens is its type locality in Lavrion, Greece. All specimens available on the collector's market come from this single location.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the extreme delicacy and small size of its crystals, tondiite specimens should not be cleaned mechanically or chemically. Any attempt at cleaning risks irreversible damage to the mineral. Only dust should be removed using compressed air from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water, acids, detergents, and all chemicals. The mineral is likely sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. It should not be exposed to direct sunlight. ## Storage Tondiite specimens should be stored in stable conditions, preferably in sealed, lidded "micromount" boxes, which protect against dust, humidity, and mechanical damage. Display should only be done under magnification, without direct contact.
