Tolbachite is a rare copper chloride, forming tabular crystals and aggregates with a metallic luster, found in volcanic environments.

## Characteristics Tolbachite is a rare mineral from the chloride group, chemically corresponding to copper(II) chloride. It most commonly occurs as very small, thin, tabular crystals with a hexagonal outline. These crystals often form rosette-like or scaly aggregates, as well as coatings and efflorescences on rocks. Due to its chemical composition, it is closely related to nantokite (CuCl). ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a metallic to submetallic luster. It is opaque. Its Mohs hardness is approximately 3, and its density ranges between 3.64 and 3.7 g/cm³. It is a brittle mineral with perfect cleavage in one direction. ## Colors and Varieties Tolbachite has a characteristic, brownish-black to black color. In transmitted light under a microscope, it may show shades from yellowish-brown to reddish-brown. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery locality – Tolbachik volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. It was described and approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1982. The discovery was made by Russian mineralogists L.P. Vergasova and S.K. Filatov. ## Uses Tolbachite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, as a rare and interesting mineral from a unique volcanic environment.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Tolbachite can be identified by its black or brownish-black color, metallic luster, and characteristic thin, tabular crystals forming scaly aggregates. The key is its occurrence in volcanic fumaroles. Its reaction to moisture (solubility) is also a diagnostic, though destructive, feature. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other dark minerals found in fumaroles, such as tenorite (CuO) or hematite (Fe₂O₃). Tenorite is usually harder and does not exhibit such distinct tabular crystal forms. Hematite has a reddish-brown streak, while tolbachite's streak is black. Final distinction often requires chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Tolbachite crystals are very thin, tabular, with a hexagonal outline. They usually occur as small scales, rosette-like aggregates, and as thin coatings and efflorescences on lava or volcanic tuff.

Geological environment

## Genesis Tolbachite is a mineral of volcanic origin. It forms through sublimation from volcanic gases rich in chlorine and copper. It crystallizes at high temperatures (above 400°C) in active fumaroles, depositing directly on volcanic rocks, such as basalt. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other products of volcanic exhalations. It is most often accompanied by tenorite, hematite, halite, sylvite, melanothallite, as well as rarer copper and lead chlorides and sulfates. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for tolbachite is the fumaroles of the Great Fissure Eruption of Tolbachik volcano on Kamchatka, Russia. This is its type locality. Additionally, its presence has been noted in eruption products of Mount Vesuvius in Italy.

## Quality Criteria The most prized by collectors are specimens with well-formed, sharp crystals creating aesthetic, rosette-like aggregates. Contrast with a light matrix rock is important. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, specimens suitable for viewing under magnification (so-called "micromounts") are standard. Large, rich aggregates are exceptionally rare and sought after. ## Popular Localities Undoubtedly, the most desirable and classic specimens come from Tolbachik volcano on Kamchatka. Material from Vesuvius is also known, but specimens from the type locality are considered the best in the world.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Tolbachite specimens are extremely delicate and sensitive. Mechanical cleaning is highly inadvisable. If necessary, compressed air can be used to remove loose dust particles. Contact with water should be avoided, as the mineral is soluble in it. ## What to Avoid Absolutely avoid contact with water, water vapor, and high humidity, which cause its decomposition. It should be protected from all chemicals, acids, and cleaning agents. It is a brittle mineral, sensitive to shocks and mechanical damage. ## Storage Tolbachite specimens must be stored in dry conditions, preferably in airtight containers (so-called "perky boxes") with a desiccant, such as silica gel. They should be kept away from heat sources and direct sunlight, in a stable environment.
