Tisinalite is a very rare mineral from the zorbite group, discovered in the Khibiny Massif in Russia, forming small, prismatic crystals with a vitreous luster.

## Characteristics Tisinalite is a complex sodium, manganese, and titanium silicate, belonging to the zorbite group. It occurs as very small, prismatic or acicular crystals, reaching lengths of up to 1-2 mm and thicknesses of up to 0.5 mm. Crystals are often aggregated into radial or chaotic clusters. It is a transparent mineral with a vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties Tisinalite is characterized by a hardness of approximately 5 on the Mohs scale. Its density is about 2.86 g/cm³. The luster is vitreous, and the streak is white. It is brittle and exhibits an uneven fracture. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is colorless or has a pale yellow hue. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Tisinalite was first described in 1980 by A.P. Khomyakov, A.A. Voronkov, V.V. Kurasov, N.G. Shumyataskaya, K.A. Timofeeva, J.A. Malakhov, and J.A. Pyatenko. Its name refers to its chemical composition, in which titanium (Ti), silicon (Si), and sodium (Na) are dominant – **Ti**-**Si**-**Na**-lite. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and small crystal size, tisinalite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a collector's item for specialized rare mineral collectors.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Amateur identification of tisinalite is practically impossible due to its rarity and small crystal size. It requires advanced analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). Preliminary identification within the host rock is based on observing small, colorless or pale yellow, prismatic crystals with a vitreous luster in cavities of nepheline syenite pegmatites. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Tisinalite can be confused with other rare silicates found in the same environment, such as zorbite, chibinite, or umbite. Differentiation requires specialized laboratory analysis. ## Crystal Forms It forms elongated, prismatic or acicular crystals, often terminated by a pinacoid. Crystals typically occur as radial or tangled aggregates in small rock cavities.

Geological environment

## Genesis Tisinalite is a mineral of hydrothermal origin. It forms in the late stage of crystallization of highly alkaline nepheline syenite pegmatites, crystallizing in rock voids and cavities. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare minerals typical of the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs' pegmatites. The most common associated minerals include aegirine, nepheline, microcline, natrolite, lorenzenite, eudialyte, lomonosovite, as well as other titanium and zirconium silicates. ## Localities Tisinalite is an extremely rare mineral, known from only a few localities worldwide. The type locality is Mount Koashva in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. It has also been found in the nearby Lovozero Massif.

## Quality Criteria The most valuable tisinalite specimens are those that contain well-formed, transparent crystals with a visible pale yellow tint, set on a contrasting rock matrix. Due to their small size, the quality and form of the crystals, as well as the richness of the aggregate, are crucial. The presence of rare associated minerals also increases the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities The only source of collectible tisinalite specimens is the Kola Peninsula in Russia, specifically the alkaline massifs of Khibiny (Mount Koashva) and Lovozero. Specimens from these localities are highly prized by collectors specializing in rare minerals and "micromounts."

Care and storage

## Cleaning Tisinalite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to the small size of the crystals and their brittleness, wet cleaning or the use of ultrasonic cleaners is not recommended. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids and other chemicals. The mineral is brittle, so protect it from impacts and vibrations. Do not heat it or expose it to sudden temperature changes. ## Storage The safest way to store tisinalite is to place it in a sealed "micromount" box, which protects delicate crystals from mechanical damage and dust. It should be stored under stable room conditions.
