Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of tietaiyangite is only possible using advanced laboratory techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with chemical composition analysis (EDS) and electron diffraction. It is impossible to identify in field conditions or in a typical collection. Under a microscope (in reflected light), it is gray with a brownish tint and exhibits weak pleochroism. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Tietaiyangite is chemically and structurally related to hematite and ilmenite, in which it often occurs as an inclusion. It can be distinguished from hematite (Fe₂O₃) and pseudobrookite (Fe₂TiO₅) based on precise analysis of the iron to titanium ratio. Its hexagonal structure distinguishes it from orthorhombic pseudobrookite. ## Crystal Forms It forms very small, hexagonal, tabular crystals. They usually occur as single, dispersed flakes or inclusions within other minerals, mainly hematite.
Geological environment
## Genesis Tietaiyangite forms under conditions of high-pressure and high-temperature metamorphism. It has been identified in peridotite rocks and chromitites within ophiolite complexes. Its presence indicates specific conditions in the deep Earth's mantle where these rocks formed. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with chromite, hematite, ilmenite, pseudobrookite, rutile, coesite, and also with minerals from the serpentine group. It often forms inclusions in hematite or occurs at chromite grain boundaries. ## Localities The only confirmed and described occurrence (type locality) of tietaiyangite in the world is the Luobusha ophiolite massif in the Tibetan Autonomous Region, China. This is one of the world's largest podiform chromite deposits.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a tietaiyangite specimen is primarily assessed through its scientific and documentary value. Since the crystals are microscopic, the certainty of identification confirmed by analyses is most important. A specimen gains value if it contains well-formed, though still microscopic, tietaiyangite crystals accompanied by other rare minerals. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality – the Luobusha ophiolite in Tibet. Material from this locality is extremely difficult to obtain and is almost exclusively available in scientific institutions and highly specialized micromineral collections.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to their microscopic size and occurrence as inclusions, individual tietaiyangite crystals are not subject to cleaning. Specimens of the host rock (matrix) can be cleaned with compressed air to remove dust. Invasive methods should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Contact with strong acids and chemicals that could damage both tietaiyangite and associated minerals should be avoided. There is no detailed data on its sensitivity to light or temperature, but standard caution is recommended. ## Storage Specimens containing tietaiyangite should be stored under stable conditions, in sealed "micromount" boxes, to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Mineral identification requires laboratory equipment, so proper and permanent labeling of the sample is crucial.
