Diagnostic features
## Identification The key diagnostic feature of terskite is its fibrous or felted form, silky luster, and occurrence in a specific geological environment – pegmatites and hydrothermal veins associated with alkaline massifs. It reacts with hydrochloric acid, forming a gel. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other fibrous minerals, such as fibrous gypsum (selenite), chrysotile (asbestos), or pectolite. It is distinguished from gypsum by its significantly greater hardness (gypsum can be scratched with a fingernail). It can be distinguished from pectolite and chrysotile based on chemical tests (reaction with HCl) and compositional analysis (presence of zirconium), as well as by knowing the mineral paragenesis at the locality. ## Crystal Forms Terskite does not form well-developed, macroscopically visible crystals. It occurs in the form of fibrous, felted, or radial aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Terskite is a hydrothermal mineral, crystallizing in the late stages of the evolution of alkaline massifs, such as nepheline syenites. It forms in pegmatite and hydrothermal veins cutting these massifs, as a result of the activity of solutions rich in sodium, silicon, and zirconium. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with minerals typical of alkaline environments. Its constant associates include eudialyte, lorenzenite, nepheline, microcline, aegirine, as well as rarer zirconium minerals like elpidite. The presence of these minerals is an important clue for identification. ## Localities The most important and classic terskite localities are on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, within the Khibiny and Lovozero alkaline massifs (e.g., Koashva Mountain, Karnasurt, Kedykverpakhk). These are the only places in the world where terskite occurs in significant quantities, although it is still a very rare mineral.

## Quality Criteria For collectors, the most valuable specimens are those with rich, dense aggregates of pure white, silky fibers, forming distinct veins in the host rock. Attractiveness is enhanced by contrast with a darker rock matrix and co-occurrence with other rare minerals from the Kola Peninsula, such as eudialyte or lorenzenite. Purity (lack of impurities and discoloration) and the integrity of the delicate aggregate are crucial. ## Popular Localities By far the most prized and practically the only specimens available on the collector's market come from the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs on the Kola Peninsula in Russia.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Dry cleaning is recommended, using a soft brush to remove dust. Fibrous aggregates are delicate and can be easily mechanically damaged. ## What to Avoid Absolute avoidance of contact with water and all chemicals, including acids, which can damage the mineral, is essential. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners. Protect from high temperatures and sudden thermal changes. ## Storage Terskite specimens should be stored under stable conditions, in closed boxes or display cases, to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Due to its delicate, fibrous structure, it should not be stored in contact with harder minerals.
