Tavagnascoite is a very rare bismuth oxysulfate, forming microscopic, platy crystals of a yellow color.

## Characteristics Tavagnascoite is a bismuth oxysulfate, occurring as very fine, platy or bladed crystals, rarely exceeding 0.2 mm in length. These crystals form rosette-like or radial aggregates, as well as thin coatings and crusts. It is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation zones of bismuth ores. ## Physical Properties The crystals exhibit a vitreous or slightly pearly luster. Due to the small size of the crystals, most physical properties, such as hardness or density, have not been precisely determined. ## Colors and Varieties Tavagnascoite has a characteristic, light yellow to canary yellow color. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was approved by the IMA in 2010 (IMA2010-047). Its name comes from the town of Tavagnasco in Italy, near which its type locality – the Speranza iron ore mine – is located. It was discovered and described by a group of Italian mineralogists, including Italo Campostrini and Ferruccio Boria.

Distinguishing them "by hand" is practically impossible. Tavagnascoite is distinguished by its unique chemical composition (it is a bismuth oxysulfate) and specific crystal structure, which can only be confirmed in a laboratory. ## Crystal Forms The mineral forms thin, platy or bladed crystals, often flattened parallel to the {010} plane. These crystals combine into small, radial or rosette-like aggregates, and also form thin coatings on the surface of the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Tavagnascoite is a secondary mineral that forms as a result of the weathering (oxidation) of primary bismuth ores, mainly bismuthinite (Bi₂S₃), in the presence of sulfate-rich solutions. It forms in cavities and fissures of quartz rocks. ## Mineral Associations At the type locality (Speranza mine), tavagnascoite co-occurs with bismuthinite, native bismuth, bismite, bismutite, cannizzarite, lillianite, quartz, and pyrite. ## Localities The only confirmed and described occurrence of tavagnascoite in the world is its type locality: the Speranza mine, located in the municipality of Tavagnasco, Piedmont, Italy.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens should only be cleaned with compressed air to remove dust. Due to the extreme delicacy and small size of the crystals, any other method, including the use of water or brushes, risks irreversible destruction of the mineral. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water, chemicals, ultrasound, and any vibrations or impacts. The crystals are very brittle and easily susceptible to mechanical damage. ## Storage Store only in tightly sealed "micromount" boxes, away from dust, moisture, and vibrations.
