It is characterized by a resinous luster. Its hardness and density have not been precisely studied, but like other fossil resins, it is likely very soft and light. ## Colors and Varieties It is described as a yellowish material. No varieties are known. ## History and Name The name comes from its discovery location – the Tartare mine, near La Mure in the Isère department, France. This substance was found in a mercury mine. It is a dubious species, and its chemical formula is C₁₆H₂₂O, which confirms its organic nature. The formula "C" (carbon) given in some sources is incorrect. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and uncertain status, tartarosite has no practical applications. It is solely an object of interest for specialized collectors and scientists.
