## Characteristics Tancoite is a very rare mineral from the phosphate group, valued by collectors for its unique appearance and origin. It forms exceptionally striking, radial or spherulitic aggregates, composed of fine, bladed or acicular crystals. These structures resemble fans or spheres and are usually embedded in small rock cavities (druses). ## Physical Properties Tancoite crystals are transparent to translucent and exhibit a vitreous luster. This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 4.5 and a density of 2.86 g/cm³. It is brittle, and its crystals are easily damaged. ## Colors and Varieties Tancoite most commonly occurs in shades from pale pink to intense pink, less frequently it is colorless. Its color is associated with the presence of trace amounts of manganese. No commercial or color varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery locality – the Tanco mine, located on Bernic Lake in Manitoba, Canada. It was first described in 1980 by a team of mineralogists: R.A. Ramik, B.D. Sturman, P.J. Dunn, and P. Povondra. ## Applications Tancoite has no industrial applications.
