Svyazhinite is a rare, hydrated magnesium and aluminum sulfate, forming soft, colorless or yellowish crystals and aggregates.

## Characteristics Svyazhinite is a sulfate mineral that visually presents as small, tabular or lath-like crystals. They are typically colorless, white, or have a pale yellow hue. They often form aggregates in the shape of rosettes, spherulites (spherical aggregates), or thin coatings and efflorescences on rock surfaces. Due to the small size of the crystals, its features are best observed under magnification. ## Physical Properties It is a very soft mineral, with a Mohs hardness of only 2. It has a vitreous luster, and sometimes a pearly luster on cleavage surfaces. It is transparent to translucent. Its density is low, approximately 1.75 g/cm³, which is typical for highly hydrated minerals. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral does not have defined varieties. Its coloration is uniform and ranges from colorless, through white, to pale yellow. ## History and Name Svyazhinite was first described in 1984. Its name comes from the discovery locality – the Svyazhina River in the Southern Urals, Russia. It was approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). ## Uses Svyazhinite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, being an object of interest due to its rarity and specific formation conditions.

## Identification Key diagnostic features of svyazhinite are its extreme softness (it can be scratched with a fingernail), low density, and characteristic forms of occurrence as small, tabular crystals forming rosettes or spherulites. Its reaction to water (solubility) is also a characteristic feature, although destructive to the sample. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other secondary, hydrated sulfates, such as gypsum or epsomite. It differs from gypsum by its even lower hardness and often different crystal habit. From epsomite, which forms acicular efflorescences, it differs by its crystal habit (tabular) and chemical composition. Accurate identification usually requires advanced analytical methods. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are very small, with a tabular or lath-like habit, often flattened. They form characteristic aggregates in the shape of rosettes, fans, spherulites, and thin, fragile crusts and efflorescences.

Geological environment

## Genesis Svyazhinite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation zones (gossans) of polymetallic deposits, especially those rich in sulfides. It forms as a result of the weathering of primary minerals in a temperate climate. It is a product of relatively recent geological processes. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with other minerals of the oxidation zone, such as melanterite, epsomite, gypsum, halotrichite, pickeringite, as well as with ore minerals, e.g., pyrite and chalcopyrite. ## Localities The most important and classic locality, from which the best specimens originate, is the Blyava Mine in the Southern Urals, Russia (type locality). It has also been reported in several other places worldwide, including mines in the Czech Republic (e.g., Chvaletice) and Hungary, however, these occurrences are of much lesser significance.

## Quality Criteria The most desirable svyazhinite specimens are those with well-formed, distinct rosettes or spherulites of an intense yellow color, contrasting with the rock matrix. The size of the aggregates and the absence of mechanical damage are crucial, given the extreme delicacy of this mineral. Specimens from the type locality (Southern Urals) are particularly prized. ## Popular Localities Practically the only source of collectible specimens is the Blyava Mine in the Southern Urals, Russia. Specimens from other localities are usually microscopic and are of purely scientific interest.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its extreme softness and water solubility, svyazhinite should not be cleaned wet. Any contact with water, even a damp cloth, can damage or dissolve the specimen. Dust can be removed very carefully using a soft, dry brush or a photographic blower. ## What to Avoid Contact with water and all liquids must be strictly avoided. The mineral is unstable in dry air, as it easily loses water from its structure, leading to its disintegration. It should be protected from high temperatures, direct sunlight, and changes in humidity. ## Storage Svyazhinite specimens are best stored in tightly sealed containers (e.g., "membrane boxes" or boxes with gaskets) to maintain a stable humidity level and prevent dehydration. It should be kept away from heat sources and in a place with a constant temperature.
