Sveite is an extremely rare nitrate mineral, occurring as white, brittle efflorescences in the only known locality in the world.

## Characteristics Sveite is a hydrated potassium, aluminum, chlorine, and hydroxyl group nitrate with the chemical formula KAl₇(NO₃)₄(OH)₁₆Cl₂·8H₂O. It forms very small, thin crystals with a hexagonal outline, most commonly found as brittle, earthy, or compact aggregates and efflorescences of white or colorless appearance. It is a very soft and brittle mineral. ## Physical Properties The hardness of sveite on the Mohs scale is 2, making it a very easily scratched mineral. It has a vitreous luster and is transparent to translucent. Its density is approximately 2.03 g/cm³. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one plane, contributing to its brittleness. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is usually colorless or white. No colored varieties or trade names are known. ## History and Name Sveite was first described in 1983 by George E. Ericksen, Mary E. Mrose, Joseph J. Fahey, and M. C. Duff. Its name comes from the discovery location – Cueva de la Svea cave in Falcón State, Venezuela. The cave's name is an acronym for Sociedad Venezolana de Espeleología (Venezuelan Speleological Society). ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and small size, sveite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a valuable acquisition for specialized mineral collectors.

## Identification Characteristic features of sveite include its occurrence as white, soft efflorescences, extreme softness (Mohs hardness of 2), and perfect cleavage. Key to identification is its specific formation environment – as a product of bat guano weathering in caves. Water solubility is also an important diagnostic feature. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Sveite can be confused with other white, soft secondary minerals found in caves, such as gypsum, nitratine, or other nitrates. Gypsum is slightly harder and has different crystal forms. It can be distinguished from other nitrates based on chemical or crystallographic analysis, although its hexagonal plates, if visible, can be a helpful clue. ## Crystal Forms Sveite forms aggregates composed of very small, thin, platy crystals with a hexagonal outline. They usually occur as crusts, efflorescences, and coatings on the host rock.

## Genesis Sveite is a secondary mineral, forming under very specific conditions. It forms as a result of the reaction of nitrate-rich solutions, derived from weathering bat guano, with aluminosilicates forming the cave walls. The presence of potassium and chlorine in the environment is essential for its formation. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other minerals typical of a cave environment with guano. The most common associated mineral is taylorite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of sveite in the world is its type locality – Cueva de la Svea cave, located in the Miranda municipality, Falcón State, Venezuela.

## Quality Criteria As an extremely rare mineral, every sveite specimen is valuable. Samples with rich, well-formed efflorescences covering a significant area of the host rock are most highly valued. Purity of white color and absence of impurities also increase the specimen's value. Due to the nature of the mineral, the size of individual crystals is microscopic, so the richness and aesthetics of the entire aggregate are primarily assessed. ## Popular Localities The only collectible specimens come from the type locality in Venezuela. This mineral is practically unavailable on the open market and is mainly found in institutional collections and among specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Sveite is a water-soluble and extremely delicate mineral. Cleaning should be kept to an absolute minimum. A very soft, dry brush can be used to remove loose dust, or a stream of compressed air can be carefully applied from a distance. ## What to Avoid Contact with water and any other liquids that would dissolve it must be strictly avoided. The mineral is hygroscopic, so it must be protected from atmospheric moisture. High temperatures, direct sunlight, and any shocks or impacts should also be avoided due to its low hardness and perfect cleavage. ## Storage Sveite specimens must be stored in dry conditions. It is best to place them in a sealed, airtight container (e.g., a "perky box") along with a moisture-absorbing agent such as silica gel. Display should be away from sources of vibration and at a stable temperature.
