Diagnostic features
## Identification Struvite is most easily recognized by its characteristic, sharply terminated, wedge-shaped or tabular crystals. Its low hardness (2 on the Mohs scale), low density, and specific occurrence environment (guano deposits, organic matter) are key diagnostic features. It is soluble in acids. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Struvite crystals can be confused with baryte or celestine due to similar crystal shapes. However, struvite is significantly lighter and incomparably softer than them (baryte and celestine have a hardness of 3-3.5). Unlike them, struvite forms in organic environments, not hydrothermal or sedimentary ones. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are usually well-formed, with a thick-tabular habit, often with wedge-shaped terminations. They occur as single crystals, in druses, or in radial aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Struvite is a mineral of organic genesis. It forms as a result of chemical reactions in environments rich in phosphate and ammonium ions, derived from the decomposition of organic matter (e.g., urine, feces) in the presence of magnesium ions. It forms at low temperatures. ## Mineral Associations It often occurs alone or in association with other phosphates formed under similar conditions, such as newberyite, hannayite, schertelite, as well as calcite and gypsum. It co-occurs with organic matter, e.g., guano. ## Localities The classic locality is Hamburg, Germany, where it was discovered in bat guano. It is found in caves inhabited by bats or birds, e.g., in Skipton Caves, Australia. It also forms in sewage sludge and as a pathological product in the urinary tracts of humans and animals (kidney stones).

## Quality Criteria The most valued by collectors are large, well-formed, transparent, and colorless crystals with sharp edges and a vitreous luster. Specimens from the classic, historical locality in Hamburg are sought after, as are large crystal groups from Australian caves. Purity and lack of mechanical damage significantly increase the value of a specimen. ## Popular Localities The most important localities from a collector's perspective are the Skipton Caves in Victoria, Australia, which yield large and well-formed crystals. Finds from Hamburg, Germany, have historical significance. The mineral is also found in many other guano caves worldwide.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Struvite specimens should be cleaned with utmost care due to their softness and solubility. It is best to use only compressed air to remove dust. Contact with water, especially warm water, can lead to dissolution or damage to the crystal surfaces. If wet cleaning is absolutely necessary, use a cotton swab very lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol, minimizing contact. ## What to Avoid Water, acids, detergents, and ultrasonic cleaners must be absolutely avoided. Struvite is sensitive to elevated temperatures, which can cause dehydration and disintegration. It should be protected from direct sunlight and stored away from heat sources. ## Storage Store in stable conditions, in a dry place, preferably in a closed display box or cabinet, to protect it from dust and mechanical damage. Due to its low hardness, it should not come into contact with harder minerals.
