Stronadelphite is a rare mineral of the apatite group, being the strontium analog of fluorapatite, with a characteristic crystal structure.

## Characteristics Stronadelphite is a mineral belonging to the apatite group, defined as its strontium-fluorine representative. It was discovered in agpaitic (highly alkaline) pegmatites in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula, Russia. It occurs as hexagonal, prismatic crystals, often elongated, reaching up to 1 cm in length and 0.3 cm in thickness. It usually forms granular aggregates or radial clusters. It is transparent to translucent, with a vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties Stronadelphite is characterized by a Mohs hardness of 5, which is typical for minerals of the apatite group. Its density is relatively high, around 4.01 g/cm³. It has imperfect cleavage along the basal plane and an uneven, conchoidal fracture. It does not exhibit fluorescence under ultraviolet light. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is usually colorless, white, or has a pale yellow hue. Some crystals may show color zoning, with a colorless interior and a yellowish outer rim. No distinct varieties have been identified. ## History and Name Stronadelphite was formally described as a new mineral in 2008 by a team of mineralogists led by Igor V. Pekov. Its name comes from two parts: "stron-" refers to the dominant strontium (Sr) in its composition, and "-adelphite" (from Greek ἀδελφός - brother) alludes to its close structural and chemical relationship with other minerals of the apatite group, particularly fluorapatite, of which it is the strontium analog.

## Identification Its key diagnostic feature is its chemical composition, requiring advanced analyses (EDS, WDS). In the field or a collection, it can be preliminarily identified based on its hexagonal crystal form, hardness (5 on the Mohs scale), high density, and occurrence in a specific geological environment (alkaline pegmatites). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Stronadelphite is visually almost indistinguishable from other colorless or white minerals of the apatite group, such as fluorapatite or hydroxylapatite, without chemical analysis. It differs from them by the dominance of strontium over calcium. It can also be confused with other hexagonal minerals found in pegmatites, but its paragenesis and physical properties are helpful in narrowing down the possibilities. ## Crystal Forms Stronadelphite crystals have a hexagonal, prismatic habit, often elongated. They are usually terminated by flat basal faces (pinacoid). It also occurs as granular aggregates and radial clusters.

Geological environment

## Genesis Stronadelphite forms in the late stages of crystallization in highly differentiated, alkaline (agpaitic) pegmatites, rich in rare elements, including strontium and phosphorus. It crystallizes from residual hydrothermal fluids in pegmatite veins cutting alkaline massifs. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare alkaline minerals. In its type locality (Khibiny Massif), it was found in association with aegirine, microcline, nepheline, sodalite, eudialyte, lorenzenite, as well as other minerals of the apatite group, such as fluorapatite and belovite-(Ce). ## Localities The only confirmed and thoroughly described occurrence of stronadelphite in the world is its type locality – the Koashva pegmatite vein in the mine of the same name, in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula, Russia.

## Quality Criteria The most valuable specimens for collectors are well-formed, sharp, transparent crystals, especially those exhibiting a hexagonal habit. Specimens set on a contrasting matrix, such as dark aegirine, are particularly prized. Crystal size is also an important factor – any specimen with crystals exceeding a few millimeters is considered exceptional. ## Popular Localities The only source of collector specimens is the Khibiny Massif in Russia. Specimens from this locality are labeled as originating from the Koashva mine or generally from Khibiny.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its rarity and potential fragility, careful cleaning is recommended. It is best to use a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, compressed air can be used from a safe distance. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with strong acids, which can damage the mineral's surface. As a member of the apatite group, it may be sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Protect it from hard and sharp objects to prevent scratches. ## Storage Stronadelphite specimens should be stored in separate, padded collector boxes to prevent mechanical damage and contact with other minerals. Due to its rarity, it should be protected from dust and direct sunlight, although the latter is not considered particularly harmful.
