Sternbergite is a rare silver iron sulfide, forming characteristic platy crystals with a brownish tarnish and metallic luster.

## Characteristics Sternbergite is a mineral belonging to the sulfide group, composed of silver and iron. Its most typical feature is the formation of thin, platy or lamellar crystals, often arranged in fan-shaped or rosette-like aggregates. Freshly exposed surfaces have a metallic, brownish-black color, but this mineral very easily and quickly becomes covered with a characteristic, bluish-violet or brownish tarnish, which may exhibit iridescence. ## Physical Properties Sternbergite crystals are soft and flexible, and thin lamellae can be bent. The Mohs hardness is 3-3.5. The mineral is characterized by a metallic luster and is opaque. Its density ranges from 4.21 to 4.25 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties The predominant color is brownish-black to black. A characteristic feature is the aforementioned tarnish, which gives the surface shades from brown to bluish-violet. No named varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1827 by Wilhelm von Haidinger. The name was given in honor of Count Kaspar Maria von Sternberg (1761-1838), a Czech botanist, mineralogist, and paleontologist, founder of the National Museum in Prague. ## Uses Due to its rarity, sternbergite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of interest for collectors and scientists.

## Genesis Sternbergite is a mineral of hydrothermal origin. It forms in low- to medium-temperature ore veins rich in silver. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with other silver minerals, such as acanthite, argentite, proustite, pyrargyrite, as well as with stephanite, stannite, pyrite, quartz, calcite, and dolomite. ## Localities The historical and most important locality, from which classic specimens originate, is Jáchymov (St. Joachimsthal) in the Czech Republic. Other known localities include Freiberg and Schneeberg in Saxony (Germany); Kongsberg (Norway); Cobalt in Ontario (Canada); La Valenciana mine in Guanajuato (Mexico); and some deposits in Arizona and Nevada (USA).

## Quality Criteria The most valued specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, sharp crystals forming aesthetic, rosette-like or fan-shaped aggregates. The size of the crystals and their good state of preservation, without mechanical damage, are important. Specimens from classic, historical localities, such as Jáchymov, command higher prices. A contrasting association with accompanying minerals (e.g., white calcite) also enhances the specimen's attractiveness. ## Popular Localities Specimens from Jáchymov in the Czech Republic and the Saxony region in Germany are considered the best in the world. Most classic, museum-quality sternbergites come from these locations.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Sternbergite specimens are extremely delicate and sensitive. Cleaning should be limited to an absolute minimum. If necessary, a very soft brush can be used to remove dust. Contact with water and any chemical agents should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Sternbergite is sensitive to moisture and atmospheric oxygen, which cause it to quickly dull and form tarnish. Acids, ultrasound, temperature changes, and exposure to sunlight, which can accelerate oxidation processes, should be avoided. The mineral is very soft, so it should be protected from scratching. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in sealed, dry containers (e.g., membrane boxes or with desiccants), in a dark and temperature-stable place. Due to the flexibility and softness of the crystals, any pressure on the specimen should be avoided.
