Diagnostic features
## Identification Stephanite can be identified by its steel-gray to black color, metallic luster, and characteristic short prismatic crystals with a pseudohexagonal outline, which are actually twins. It is relatively heavy for its size. Its low hardness (2-2.5) and black streak are key diagnostic features. It tarnishes quickly when exposed to light. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Stephanite is sometimes confused with acanthite (or argentite), which is also a black silver ore. However, acanthite is more ductile and malleable, while stephanite is brittle. It is distinguished from polybasite by the absence of red internal reflections, which can often be observed in polybasite under strong illumination. Other similar sulfosalts, such as pyrargyrite, have a red streak, in contrast to stephanite's black streak. ## Crystal Forms Stephanite crystals crystallize in the orthorhombic system, but often form multiple twins that give them the appearance of six-sided, hexagonal tablets or prisms. It also occurs as granular aggregates, rosettes, and as massive, anhedral fillings in ore veins.
Geological environment
## Genesis Stephanite is a hydrothermal mineral, forming in the final stages of crystallization in low- to medium-temperature (epithermal) ore veins. It forms in an environment rich in silver, antimony, and sulfur, often as a result of crystallization from residual solutions after the precipitation of other sulfides and sulfosalts. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other silver minerals, such as acanthite, native silver, pyrargyrite, proustite, and polybasite. It is also accompanied by other sulfides, e.g., galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and gangue minerals such as quartz, calcite, dolomite, and barite. ## Localities Historically important, classic localities that have yielded excellent specimens include Freiberg in Saxony (Germany), Příbram and Jáchymov (Czech Republic), and the mines of the Comstock Lode region in Nevada (USA). Beautiful crystals have also been found in silver mines in Mexico (Guanajuato, Zacatecas), Peru (Uchucchacua), and Canada (Cobalt, Ontario).

## Quality Criteria Specimens with sharply terminated, well-formed crystals with a pseudohexagonal outline are most valued by collectors. Crystal groups forming aesthetic compositions on a quartz or calcite matrix are also highly rated. Luster is a key factor – specimens with a fresh, shiny surface are significantly more valuable than those that are tarnished and blackened. Crystal size and the absence of mechanical damage also significantly increase the value of a specimen. ## Popular Localities Classic specimens from 19th-century mines in Germany (Freiberg) and the Czech Republic (Příbram) are historical rarities and fetch high prices. In modern times, the market has been dominated by specimens from Mexico and Peru, which provide large, well-formed crystals. Specimens from the Uchucchacua mine in Peru are particularly sought after due to their sharpness and complex forms.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Stephanite is a very delicate and sensitive mineral. To remove dust, use only a soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance. Wet cleaning is highly inadvisable, as water, especially with detergents, can accelerate the oxidation and tarnishing process of the surface. If absolutely necessary, a minimal amount of distilled water or isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab can be used, immediately drying the specimen. ## What to Avoid Exposure to sunlight and strong lighting should be strictly avoided, as they cause rapid blackening and decomposition of the mineral. Sudden temperature changes and contact with chemicals, acids, and detergents are also inadvisable. Due to its brittleness, it should be protected from impacts and vibrations. It should not be cleaned in ultrasonic cleaners. ## Storage Stephanite specimens are best stored in closed, light-proof boxes or in shaded display cases. To slow down the oxidation process, it is advisable to place moisture absorbers nearby or use special antioxidant coatings employed by professional collectors. Each specimen should be stored separately to prevent scratching.
