Sonoraite is a very rare, hydrated iron tellurite, forming characteristic acicular crystals of an intense canary-yellow color.

## Characteristics Sonoraite is a mineral from the oxide group, and chemically a hydrated iron tellurite. It occurs as small, slender crystals with a prismatic or acicular habit. These crystals often form radial or fan-shaped aggregates and crusts. Its most characteristic feature is its intense, canary-yellow color, which can sometimes take on greenish or brownish hues. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a hardness of about 3 on the Mohs scale. It is brittle and has a density of approximately 3.91 g/cm³. The luster of sonoraite is described as vitreous, and on fracture surfaces or in fibrous aggregates, it can be silky. It is a transparent to translucent mineral, especially in the case of smaller crystals. ## Colors and Varieties The dominant and almost sole color of sonoraite is bright, canary-yellow. Specimens with greenish-yellow or brownish-yellow tones are rarer. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name Sonoraite was described as a new mineral in 1968 by Joseph A. Mandarino, Scott A. Williams, and R. S. Mitchell. Its name comes from its discovery locality – the state of Sonora in Mexico, where its type and most important locality, the Moctezuma (Bambolla) mine, is located. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity, sonoraite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a prized acquisition in advanced mineral collections, especially those specializing in rare species or tellurium minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification The main features allowing for the identification of sonoraite are its intensely canary-yellow color, acicular or slender prismatic crystal habit, and tendency to form radial aggregates. Its paragenesis – co-occurrence with other, often rare, tellurium minerals – is also crucial. ## Differentiation from Similar Minerals Sonoraite can be confused with other secondary yellow-colored tellurium minerals, such as emmonsite or mackayite. Emmonsite often exhibits more greenish hues. Definitive differentiation usually requires crystallographic or chemical analysis, but the characteristic habit and mineral associations from the type locality are strong indicators. ## Crystal Forms Sonoraite forms elongated, prismatic or acicular crystals, terminated by flat or oblique faces. They most often occur as radial or fan-shaped aggregates, as well as tangled crusts and coatings on the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis It is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation zones of hydrothermal ore deposits rich in tellurium. It forms as a result of weathering and alteration of primary tellurides under near-surface conditions. ## Mineral Associations Sonoraite often co-occurs with other oxygen-bearing tellurium compounds, such as emmonsite, mackayite, paratellurite, and also native tellurium. It is also accompanied by quartz, goethite, and other iron minerals. ## Localities The most important and best-known worldwide locality for sonoraite is the Moctezuma mine (also known as the Bambolla mine) in Moctezuma, Sonora state, Mexico. This is the type locality, from which the best specimens of this mineral originate. It has also been reported from several other places in the world, including a mine in Utah (USA), but specimens from there are much rarer and less spectacular.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued sonoraite specimens are those that have sharply terminated, well-formed crystals of a vibrant, canary-yellow color. Aesthetically pleasing, radial aggregates embedded on a contrasting rock matrix are particularly desirable. The size and richness of the crystalline aggregates, as well as the absence of damage, significantly increase the collector's value of the specimen. ## Popular Localities The Moctezuma mine in the Mexican state of Sonora is practically the only source of high-quality sonoraite specimens on the collector's market. Minerals from this locality are considered the global standard for this species.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Sonoraite specimens are delicate and should be cleaned with great care. The safest method is to use a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, the specimen can be very gently rinsed with distilled water, avoiding a strong stream. Ultrasonic cleaners should be strictly avoided. ## What to Avoid The mineral is soft and brittle, so it should be protected from impacts, scratching, and vibrations. Contact with any chemicals, especially acids, should be avoided. It is stable under normal lighting and temperature conditions. ## Storage It is recommended to store sonoraite specimens in sealed "micromount" boxes, which protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. This allows for safe observation without the need to touch the delicate crystals.
