## Characteristics Simpsonite is a rare tantalum and aluminum oxide, occurring as characteristic, tabular crystals with a hexagonal outline. They are usually small, rarely exceeding a few millimeters, although centimeter-sized specimens are known. The mineral is most often colorless, white, cream, yellowish, or light brown. Its high density is one of its key features, noticeable even in small specimens. ## Physical Properties Simpsonite is characterized by significant hardness, ranging from 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, which makes it scratch-resistant. The luster is subadamantine, close to vitreous, giving the crystals a lively appearance. It is a transparent to translucent mineral. Its density is very high, ranging from 6.55 to 6.81 g/cm³, which is typical for tantalum-bearing minerals. ## Colors and Varieties The color spectrum of simpsonite ranges from colorless and white, through cream and pale yellow, to light brown and reddish-brown. No named commercial or colored varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1938. Its name commemorates Edward Sydney Simpson (1875–1939), an Australian mineralogist and chemical analyst who made significant contributions to the mineralogical research of Western Australia. ## Uses Due to its rarity, simpsonite has no industrial applications as a tantalum ore. However, it is a valuable and sought-after collector's stone.

## Identification The most important diagnostic features of simpsonite are its characteristic crystal habit (short, tabular with a hexagonal outline), high hardness (7-7.5), and very high density. It often exhibits fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) light, usually in shades of blue, cream, or white, which is a strong diagnostic indicator. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Simpsonite can be confused with other hexagonal pegmatitic minerals, such as apatite or beryl. It is distinguished from them by its significantly higher density. From microlite, with which it often co-occurs, it differs in crystal habit (microlite forms isometric crystals, mainly octahedra). ## Crystal Forms Simpsonite crystals are usually short, prismatic or tabular, terminated by a flat base (pinacoid). Their cross-section is distinctly hexagonal. They occur as single, well-formed crystals or in small groups.

Geological environment

## Genesis Simpsonite is a secondary mineral, formed in alteration zones of complex, lithium-cesium-tantalum (LCT) granite pegmatites. It forms as a result of hydrothermal or metasomatic alteration of primary tantalum minerals, such as tantalite-(Mn), tantalite-(Fe), or minerals from the microlite group. ## Mineral Associations It most often co-occurs with other tantalum minerals, such as tantalite, stibiotantalite, and microlite. It is also accompanied by typical pegmatitic minerals: quartz, albite (especially the cleavelandite variety), lepidolite, spodumene, beryl, and pollucite. ## Localities The type locality is Tabba Tabba in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Other significant localities, from which high-quality specimens originate, include the Alto Ligonha district in Mozambique, pegmatites in Zimbabwe (e.g., Bikita), and in Brazil (Paraíba and Minas Gerais states).

## Quality Criteria The most valued by collectors are sharp, well-formed, and undamaged crystals with a distinct hexagonal outline. Transparent specimens with an intense yellow color have higher value. Crystal size is crucial, and specimens exceeding one centimeter are rare. Aesthetic placement on a rock matrix, e.g., on albite or in association with lepidolite, also enhances its attractiveness. ## Popular Localities Specimens from Tabba Tabba in Australia and Alto Ligonha in Mozambique are considered classic and most desirable. These localities have historically provided the best crystals of this mineral. Brazilian specimens, although often smaller, are also valued in specialized collections.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Simpsonite specimens should be cleaned gently, using a soft brush and distilled water. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they can cause fractures along internal stresses within the crystal. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to strong acids. Despite its high hardness, it should be protected from impacts and sudden temperature changes, which can lead to damage, especially on crystal edges. ## Storage It is recommended to store simpsonite in separate, padded boxes to prevent scratching other, softer minerals in the collection. It is stable and does not require protection from light.
