Simferite is a rare lithium and magnesium phosphate, forming colorless, yellowish, or greenish crystals in hydrothermally altered serpentinites.

## Characteristics Simferite is a rare phosphate mineral belonging to the olivenite group. It typically occurs as small, well-formed, prismatic crystals. Its appearance is subtle, and specimens rarely exceed a few millimeters in size, making them prized objects in specialized collections. ## Physical Properties It is characterized by a Mohs hardness of 4.5, making it a relatively soft and brittle mineral. It has a vitreous luster and is transparent to translucent. Its density is approximately 3.06 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Simferite crystals are most often colorless but can take on yellowish or greenish-yellow hues. There are no named commercial varieties. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from the city of Simferopol in Crimea (Ukraine), near which its type locality is located. It was approved as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1989. ## Uses Simferite has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible due to its great rarity.

It forms in voids and fissures in altered (serpentinized) ultramafic rocks, as a result of phosphorus-rich solutions. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with minerals such as olivenite, magnetite, chromite, lizardite, magnesite, and other rare phosphates. ## Localities The main and best-known occurrence of simferite is the Pereval'noe quarry near Simferopol in Crimea (Ukraine), which is its type locality. This is the only place from which well-formed specimens originate.

Specimens from this location are highly sought after by specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush and distilled water. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they could damage the brittle crystals. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids. It should be protected from sudden temperature changes and strong chemicals. Due to its moderate hardness, it is susceptible to scratching by common minerals such as quartz. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in separate, padded display boxes or cabinets to avoid contact with harder minerals and protect them from dust and mechanical damage.
