Diagnostic features
## Identification Simferite is identified by its crystal habit (short prisms), vitreous luster, color, and specific occurrence environment – in cavities within serpentinites. It is a non-fluorescent mineral. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other phosphates found in similar environments, such as olivenite, but differs from them in physical properties and chemical composition. Final identification requires advanced analytical methods, e.g., X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms It forms short, prismatic crystals with a nearly square cross-section, often aggregated into small, radial or granular masses. Crystals rarely occur individually.
Geological environment
## Genesis It is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in voids and fissures in altered (serpentinized) ultramafic rocks, as a result of phosphorus-rich solutions. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with minerals such as olivenite, magnetite, chromite, lizardite, magnesite, and other rare phosphates. ## Localities The main and best-known occurrence of simferite is the Pereval'noe quarry near Simferopol in Crimea (Ukraine), which is its type locality. This is the only place from which well-formed specimens originate.

## Quality Criteria The most prized specimens are those with well-formed, transparent crystals of a distinct yellowish color, set on a contrasting rock matrix. The size of the crystals and the presence of associated minerals, such as olivenite, are also important. ## Popular Localities The only source of valuable collectible specimens is the type locality in Crimea. Specimens from this location are highly sought after by specialized collectors of rare minerals.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush and distilled water. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they could damage the brittle crystals. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids. It should be protected from sudden temperature changes and strong chemicals. Due to its moderate hardness, it is susceptible to scratching by common minerals such as quartz. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in separate, padded display boxes or cabinets to avoid contact with harder minerals and protect them from dust and mechanical damage.
