Diagnostic features
## Identification Key features for identifying native silver are its silvery-white color (on a fresh fracture), strong metallic luster, high density, and softness (it can be scratched with a knife) combined with malleability (it can be bent or deformed). A characteristic hackly fracture and silvery-white streak are also typical. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals - **Galena**: Has a similar metallic luster, but is very brittle, has perfect cubic cleavage, and a grayish-black streak. - **Native Platinum**: Is significantly harder (4-4.5 on the Mohs scale), denser, and does not tarnish in air. - **Acanthite**: Is a silver sulfide, often forming pseudomorphs after silver. It is brittle and has a black streak. - **Native Bismuth**: Is brittle and often has a characteristic pinkish or iridescent oxide tarnish. ## Crystal Forms Well-formed crystals (cubes, octahedra, dodecahedra) are very rare. Most often, silver occurs in irregular aggregates: dendrites resembling branches or ferns, twisted wires (so-called "hair silver"), lamellae, scales, and massive, amorphous forms.
Geological environment
## Genesis Native silver primarily forms in low- to medium-temperature hydrothermal veins. It is often associated with volcanic activity. It can crystallize as a primary mineral from hydrothermal solutions or form secondarily in the oxidation (cementation) zones of silver, copper, and lead ore deposits, where it is precipitated from solutions by other minerals. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with silver minerals such as acanthite, proustite, pyrargyrite, as well as galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, bornite, quartz, calcite, barite, and fluorite. In some localities, it forms natural alloys with gold (electrum) or mercury (amalgam), as well as intergrowths with native copper. ## Localities Historically, the most important and well-known source of crystalline silver was Kongsberg in Norway, from which famous "wire-like" specimens originate. Other significant localities include Freiberg and Annaberg in Saxony (Germany), Příbram (Czech Republic), the Cobalt region in Ontario (Canada), Batopilas in Mexico (famous dendrites), the Imiter mine in Morocco, and the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan (USA), where it occurs in paragenesis with native copper.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued by collectors are specimens with well-formed, sharp crystals, which are, however, extremely rare. Aesthetic, complex dendritic and "wire-like" forms are very popular, especially if they are embedded in a contrasting rock matrix (e.g., on calcite). Size, lack of damage, luster, and interesting provenance (origin from a classic locality) significantly increase the value of a specimen. A delicate, natural patina is often accepted, and even desired, in contrast to a thick, black layer of tarnish.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Silver is very soft, so it should be cleaned with great care. The safest method is to use a soft brush and distilled water to remove dust and loose contaminants. Ultrasonic cleaning is risky and can damage delicate, wire-like forms. Chemical silver cleaners can be effective, but they often remove the natural patina, which for many collectors is desirable and indicates the authenticity of the specimen. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids, which can react with silver. The biggest enemy of silver is sulfur compounds, present in polluted air, wool, some types of paper, or rubber bands – these cause rapid darkening of the surface. Specimens should also be protected from high humidity, which accelerates this process. ## Storage Native silver specimens are best stored in sealed, dry containers or specialized mineral display cases. Anti-tarnish bags or cloths can be used to slow down the tarnishing process. Due to its softness, silver should not have direct contact with harder minerals that could scratch it.
