Sergewanite is an extremely rare, complex cyclosilicate, forming microscopic, prismatic, pale yellow crystals, known only from one locality worldwide.

## Characteristics Sergewanite is a very complex cyclosilicate of the eudialyte group, with an exceptionally intricate chemical composition containing sodium, calcium, manganese, iron, and zirconium. It occurs as small, prismatic crystals, rarely exceeding 0.5 mm in length. They are transparent and characterized by a pale yellow or yellowish-green color and a vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties The mineral's hardness on the Mohs scale is 5. Its density, calculated based on its chemical composition and unit cell parameters, is approximately 2.93 g/cm³. The crystals are transparent and have a vitreous luster. They do not exhibit cleavage, and their fracture is uneven. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral occurs in uniform colors, from pale yellow to yellowish-green. No color varieties or commercial forms are known. ## History and Name Sergewanite was first described in 2007 by a team of mineralogists led by Igor V. Pekov. Its name honors Viktor A. Sergeev (1938–2004), a Russian geologist and petrologist from St. Petersburg State University, who made significant contributions to the study of the Lovozero Massif. The type specimen is preserved in the A.E. Fersman Mineralogical Museum in Moscow. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, sergewanite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a valuable acquisition for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Amateur identification of sergewanite is practically impossible. Its visual characteristics – pale yellow color, prismatic form, and vitreous luster – are common to many other minerals, especially from the type locality. Definitive identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical microanalysis (EDS/WDS). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Within the Lovozero Massif, sergewanite can be confused with other rare, yellow silicates. The key distinguishing feature is its unique chemical composition, particularly the simultaneous presence of zirconium, manganese, and iron in its structure. Final differentiation from similar minerals of the eudialyte group is only possible based on detailed laboratory analyses. ## Crystal Forms Sergewanite forms short or elongated hexagonal prismatic crystals. Their size is microscopic, usually not exceeding 0.5 mm in length and 0.1-0.2 mm in width.

Geological environment

## Genesis Sergewanite forms in a unique geological environment, namely highly alkaline (hyperagpaitic) pegmatites cutting foyaite within the Lovozero Massif. It crystallizes in the late, hydrothermal stages of the formation of these pegmatites, under conditions of extreme concentration of sodium and rare elements. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare minerals typical of this locality. It most commonly co-occurs with aegirine, albite, eudialyte, lorenzenite, microcline, nepheline, and sodalite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of sergewanite worldwide is its type locality – the Karnasurt mine, located on Mount Karnasurt in the Lovozero Massif on the Kola Peninsula (Murmansk Oblast, Russia).

## Quality Criteria For such a rare micromineral as sergewanite, specimens with well-formed, sharp, and undamaged crystals are most highly valued. Their size is important – even fractions of a millimeter matter. Additional advantages include transparency, intensity of color, and abundance on the matrix (presence of several crystals). Specimens where pale yellow sergewanite crystals contrast with a dark matrix, for example with aegirine, are particularly desirable. ## Popular Localities Since this mineral is known from only one locality, all collectible specimens come from the Karnasurt mine in the Lovozero Massif in Russia. This is the only source from which this mineral can be obtained.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Sergewanite specimens, typically micromounts, should be cleaned with utmost care. For dust removal, it is best to use a gentle stream of compressed air or a very soft brush (e.g., camel hair). Avoid contact with water and any chemical agents. Ultrasonic cleaning is absolutely forbidden. ## What to Avoid This mineral is potentially sensitive to acids and other chemicals. It should be protected from sudden temperature changes, strong sunlight, which can cause fading, and humidity. Due to the small size of the crystals, it is also very susceptible to mechanical damage. ## Storage The safest storage method is to place the specimen in a specialized micromount box, which protects it from dust, shocks, and contact with other minerals. Display should be in stable conditions, away from direct light and heat sources.
