Serandite is a rare sodium manganese silicate, forming characteristic salmon-pink crystals, highly valued by collectors.

## Characteristics Serandite is a hydrated sodium manganese silicate belonging to the wollastonite group. It most commonly forms elongated, prismatic, or bladed crystals, which may be terminated by sloping faces. It usually occurs as radial or fan-shaped aggregates, as well as fibrous or matted masses. Its most characteristic and desirable feature is its intense salmon-pink to orange-pink color. ## Physical Properties Serandite is characterized by a vitreous luster, often pearly on fracture surfaces. It is a translucent mineral, and in thin fragments, it can be transparent. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is about 5, making it relatively delicate. The density ranges from 3.32 to 3.43 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties The dominant color of serandite is salmon-pink, orange-pink, light pink, reddish, or brownish. Colorless or white specimens are rarer. It is usually zoned, with darker areas within the crystals. No named varieties are distinguished, but it is the manganese analogue of pectolite. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1931 by the French mineralogist Antoine Lacroix. The name comes from J. M. Sérand, a mineral collector from West Africa, who helped collect material for research from the original locality on the Los Islands in Guinea. ## Uses Serandite has no industrial applications. Due to its rarity, attractive color, and interesting crystal forms, it is a highly valued and sought-after mineral by collectors worldwide.

## Identification The key diagnostic feature of serandite is its characteristic salmon-pink or orange-pink color, combined with its prismatic crystal habit and perfect cleavage in two directions. It often forms radial aggregates. Its occurrence in a specific geological environment (nepheline syenites) is also an important clue. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Serandite can be confused with pectolite, of which it is the manganese analogue. However, pectolite is usually white, gray, or colorless and rarely achieves the pink hues of serandite. Rhodonite, although sometimes similar in color, is much harder (5.5-6.5) and has a different crystal habit. Tugtupite, also found in Greenland, has a similar color but is tetragonal and exhibits strong fluorescence under UV light, which serandite does not. ## Crystal Forms Serandite crystals are typically elongated, prismatic, often with a nearly square cross-section. They usually occur as radial or fan-shaped aggregates, where crystals radiate from a single point. Fibrous and matted masses are also found.

Geological environment

## Genesis Serandite is a hydrothermal mineral associated with alkaline igneous rocks, such as nepheline syenites and their pegmatites. It forms in the late stages of crystallization, filling voids and fractures in the host rock. It can also form as a result of metasomatism in manganese-rich rocks. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other rare alkaline minerals. Its most common associations include: analcime, nepheline, microcline, aegirine, natrolite, eudialyte, arfvedsonite, as well as rarer minerals like willemite, leucophanite, or lorenzenite. At Mont Saint-Hilaire, it is associated with a very wide range of minerals. ## Localities The most important and world-renowned locality for serandite is the Poudrette quarry at Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec, Canada. This is where the largest and most beautiful crystals of this mineral originate. Other significant localities include the Ilimaussaq complex in Greenland, the Lovozero massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, and the discovery site on the Los Islands in Guinea.

## Quality Criteria The most highly prized serandite specimens come from Mont Saint-Hilaire and are characterized by a deep, saturated salmon-pink or orange color. Key factors are good crystal development, size, and transparency. Large, single, terminated crystals or aesthetic, radial aggregates are particularly sought after. Contrast with a white or colorless matrix (e.g., analcime) significantly enhances the specimen's attractiveness. ## Market Prices Serandite prices are high due to its rarity and popularity. Small, decently formed specimens can cost from tens to several hundred dollars. Large, well-formed crystals with intense color, especially on matrix, can fetch prices from several thousand to even tens of thousands of dollars. ## Popular Localities By far the most desired and valued material on the collector's market is serandite from the Poudrette quarry at Mont Saint-Hilaire (Quebec, Canada). Specimens from this locality set the standard against which all others are compared. Material from other locations, such as the Kola Peninsula, is much less commonly found in trade.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Serandite specimens should be cleaned very carefully. It is best to use a soft brush to remove dust. For heavier soiling, a damp, soft cloth and distilled water can be used, followed by immediate drying of the specimen. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, which can damage the crystals. ## What to Avoid Serandite is sensitive to acids, which can etch and damage its surface. Contact with all household chemicals should be avoided. The mineral is relatively soft and brittle, so it must be protected from impacts and scratches. It should not be exposed to prolonged strong sunlight, which theoretically may cause color fading. ## Storage Serandite specimens are best stored in separate, padded boxes or on soft pads in display cabinets. Protect from dust and sudden temperature changes. Due to its brittleness, avoid placing it in direct proximity to harder minerals.
