Sepiolite is a hydrated magnesium silicate, a clay mineral with exceptionally low density and a porous structure, known as meerschaum.

## Characteristics Sepiolite is a mineral from the phyllosilicate group, classified as a clay mineral. It most commonly occurs as compact, earthy, or porous masses of white, gray, or yellowish color. Its most characteristic feature is its exceptionally low density in the dry state, which allows it to float on water – hence its popular name “meerschaum” (from German: Meerschaum). It is soft and slightly greasy to the touch. Sepiolite crystals are microscopic fibers and needles that interweave to form compact aggregates. ## Physical Properties This mineral is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of 2-2.5, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. The specific gravity of the mineral itself is about 2 g/cm³, but porous aggregates have a much lower apparent density, often below 1 g/cm³. It is opaque and has a dull or earthy luster. It exhibits strong absorptive properties, absorbing water and other substances. ## Colors and Varieties Sepiolite is usually white, grayish-white, or creamy-yellow. Impurities of iron or manganese oxides can give it pink, reddish, or brownish hues. The most famous and valued variety is “meerschaum” – a pure, fine-grained, and compact form originating mainly from Turkey, which is a carving material. ## History and Name The name sepiolite was given by the German mineralogist Ernst Friedrich Glocker in 1847. It comes from the Greek words *sepion* (cuttlefish bone) and *lithos* (stone), referring to the porous and light structure of the mineral, resembling a cuttlefish skeleton. The historical name “meerschaum” refers to lumps of this mineral found on the surface of the Black Sea, which looked like hardened sea foam. ## Uses The most famous use of sepiolite is in the production of carved pipes (so-called meerschaum pipes). Its porosity makes it excellent at absorbing moisture and tar from tobacco smoke. Due to its absorptive properties, it is used as a component in cat litter, industrial absorbents, and filter media. It is also used as an additive in drilling fluids and in the production of lightweight building materials.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Key diagnostic features of sepiolite are its extremely low density (dry, porous lumps float on water), very low hardness (about 2 on the Mohs scale), and a characteristic sticking-to-the-tongue sensation due to its high porosity. It usually occurs as dull, earthy masses. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Sepiolite can be confused with other white, soft clay minerals such as kaolinite or talc. Kaolinite is also soft and earthy but has a higher density and does not float on water. Talc is distinctly greasier, soapy to the touch. Massive magnesite may look similar but is much harder (3.5-4.5) and reacts with hot acids. ## Crystal Forms Sepiolite does not form macroscopic crystals. It occurs as microcrystalline, tangled fibers that form compact, earthy, botryoidal, or reniform aggregates. The structure of these aggregates is often very porous.

Geological environment

## Genesis Sepiolite is a secondary mineral, formed by low-temperature hydrothermal processes or the weathering of magnesium-rich rocks, especially serpentinites. It can also precipitate chemically in saline, magnesium-rich lakes and sedimentary basins under arid climatic conditions. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with minerals such as serpentine, magnesite, dolomite, opal, chalcedony, and other clay minerals. ## Localities The world's most famous deposit of high-quality sepiolite (meerschaum) is located near Eskişehir in Turkey. Significant occurrences are also known from Spain (near Madrid), the USA (Nevada and California), Greece (Samos island), Morocco, Somalia, and Kenya.

## Quality Criteria The most prized by collectors are pure white, homogeneous, and lightweight meerschaum lumps from the classic locality in Turkey. Specimens showing its fibrous nature can also be attractive. Collectible value is strongly associated with the historical use of this material for making pipes and other carved products. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the Eskişehir region in Turkey are considered the best in the world – this is where the raw material for the most famous pipes is sourced. Deposits in the Madrid basin in Spain also have historical significance.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Sepiolite specimens are very soft and porous, so they should be cleaned with the utmost care. It is best to use only a dry, soft brush to remove dust. Contact with water should be avoided, as the mineral strongly absorbs it, which can lead to softening, discoloration, or structural damage. ## What to Avoid Water, soap, detergents, and all chemicals, including acids, should be strictly avoided. Sepiolite is very susceptible to scratches – its hardness is lower than that of a fingernail. It should also be protected from high temperatures, which can cause the loss of crystallization water and increase its brittleness. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in a dry place, preferably in a closed box or display case, to protect them from dust and moisture. To avoid scratches, it should not be stored in direct contact with harder minerals.
