Selwynite is an extremely rare sodium, potassium, beryllium, and zirconium phosphate, forming microscopic, prismatic crystals in pegmatites.
Description
## Characteristics Selwynite is a complex phosphate with a unique chemical composition. It occurs as small, prismatic crystals, rarely exceeding 0.2 mm in length. These crystals often form radial or divergent aggregates. It is a transparent mineral, colorless to pale brown. ## Physical Properties Selwynite has a Mohs hardness of 5. It exhibits a vitreous luster. Its density, calculated from crystallographic data, is approximately 3.23 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties The mineral is typically colorless or takes on light brown hues. No color or commercial varieties have been identified. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of Alfred Richard Cecil Selwyn (1824–1902), a British geologist and director of geological surveys in Victoria (Australia) and Canada. Selwynite was first described in 2014 by Peter Elliott and colleagues. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, selwynite has no practical applications. It is solely an object of scientific and collecting interest.

Differentiation from minerals such as wycheproofite or kosnarite requires specialized laboratory analysis. ## Crystal Forms It forms columnar or prismatic crystals, often arranged in fan-like, radial, or divergent aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Selwynite forms in the late stage of crystallization of complex granitic pegmatites. It is a hydrothermal mineral, crystallizing at low temperatures within miarolitic cavities. ## Mineral Associations At the type locality, it co-occurs with quartz, albite, microcline, muscovite, schorl, cyrtolite (a variety of zircon), and other rare phosphates, such as wycheproofite and kosnarite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence worldwide is the "Big Bertha" pegmatite in Cockatoo Valley, in the southern part of the Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia.
